Main purpose of the job:
- To assist with the administration of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) tool, as part of a study to estimate the prevalence of mental health disorders
Location:
- Wits School of Public Health, Parktown - JHB
Key performance areas:
- To undergo training in the Mini International neuropsychiatric interview (MINI)
- Support the training of health demographic surveillance site call-centre personnel (i.e., personnel who have experience in conducting telephonic research interviews among designated site participants)
- Provide on-site supervision of the call-centre personnel at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Education campus as the personnel who will administer the MINI and other questionnaires to study participants telephonically (Supervision will only concern the administration of the MINI, not the other questionnaires, or broader organisational issues)
- Evaluate the questionnaire scores and determine psychiatric diagnoses using the telephonic responses provided
- Capture the resulting assessments on the completed questionnaire (the call centre staff will capture electronically)
- Assist the personnel with problematic or follow-up telephonic interviews, including provision of distress counselling according to a pre-authorised distress protocol as the need arises
- Where deemed necessary during the interview or at the participant’s request, to conduct a home visit and administer the questionnaires in a face-to-face interview
- Inherent requirements of the job: Willing to supervise lay-people in questionnaire-based psychiatric interviews and to conduct home visits in the Hillbrow and Berea (City of Johannesburg), Atteridgeville and Melusi (City of Tshwane), with fieldworker support and as the need arises
Required minimum education and training:
- Grade 12, Basic R425 qualification (i.e., Diploma/Degree in Nursing) or equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as Professional Nurse and Mental Health
Required minimum work experience:
- 2 years appropriate/recognizable experience in a mental health unit or psychiatric facility
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Excellent attention to detail, organisation and follow through
- Experience in a research environment will be an advantage
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Willingness to learn and receive constructive feedback
- Working overtime may be required from time to time
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Must have sound work ethics
