About the position
We are seeking an experienced Principal Piping Designer to provide technical leadership on a large-scale mining project. This is a fixed-term contract opportunity based in Johannesburg, with occasional site travel fully covered by the company.
Contract Type: Fixed-term contract (2+ years)
Qualifications:
- Essential: National Diploma, BTech, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Piping Design, or a related field
- Desirable: Training in risk management or quality
Requirements:
- 15+ years of relevant piping design experience
- Mining project experience (mandatory)
- EPCM experience (mandatory)
- Proficiency in 3D design tools (e.g., E3D, PDMS, SmartPlant 3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D)
- Strong knowledge of piping layout, routing, isometric extraction, and clash detection
- Experience on PGM concentrator, smelter, or underground mining projects (distinct advantage)
Responsibilities:
- Lead piping design activities for mining projects
- Prepare and review piping layouts, isometrics, and 3D models
- Ensure adherence to engineering and design practices, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications
- Support standardization of piping drawings and document templates
- Participate in constructability, operability, and maintainability reviews
- Review and check work done by other designers
- Coordinate with piping engineers and other disciplines to ensure project success
