About the position

Principal Investment Officer - Project Finance

We are seeking an accomplished Principal Investment Officer to lead the origination, structuring, execution, and closing of complex project finance and infrastructure investment transactions. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-impact projects that contribute to economic transformation, regional integration, and sustainable development.

Key Responsibilities:

Transaction Origination & Business Development:

  • Identify, originate, and develop a pipeline of infrastructure and development finance opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with public and private sector stakeholders, sponsors, developers, financial institutions, and development partners.
  • Drive business development initiatives to support long-term growth objectives.

Transaction Assessment & Structuring:

  • Evaluate investment opportunities through comprehensive commercial, financial, technical, and risk assessments.
  • Develop innovative financing structures that enhance project bankability and optimise risk-adjusted returns.
  • Lead due diligence processes and collaborate with internal specialists to assess and mitigate transaction risks.

Transaction Execution:

  • Lead transactions from origination through to financial close.
  • Negotiate term sheets, financing agreements, and key transaction documentation.
  • Prepare and present investment recommendations to approval committees and senior decision-makers.
  • Coordinate internal and external stakeholders throughout the transaction lifecycle.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Finance, Business, Economics, Engineering, CA(SA), CFA, MBA, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in project finance, infrastructure finance, structured finance, corporate finance, or development finance.
  • Demonstrated experience originating, structuring, negotiating, and closing complex financing transactions.
  • Strong financial modelling, credit analysis, and risk assessment capabilities.
  • Proven track record in infrastructure investment transactions within South Africa and/or Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Experience engaging with senior stakeholders across public and private sector environments.
  • Established professional network within the infrastructure, banking, investment, or development finance sectors.
