About the position
Power BI and Data Insights Specialist - Dashboard design and BI data storytelling
Role purpose
Design clear, usable Power BI dashboards and turn business data into insights that support decisions. Combine reporting development, analytical judgement and dashboard user experience so that stakeholders understand performance, investigate causes and identify practical actions.
Key responsibilities
• Work with business users to define the decisions, questions, KPIs and reporting needs that each dashboard must support.
• Design report journeys, wireframes, page layouts, filters and drill paths that suit the audience and reduce interpretation effort.
• Develop Power BI reports, data models and measures, using DAX, Power Query and SQL as appropriate to the data environment.
• Validate metrics, reconcile results to agreed sources and document calculation rules, assumptions and data limitations.
• Analyse trends, variances and exceptions and present a clear narrative with business implications and recommended actions.
• Improve usability, accessibility, refresh reliability and performance through user feedback and collaboration with data teams.
• Maintain report documentation and access controls, support adoption and transfer knowledge to business users and support colleagues.
Essential experience and capabilities
• A portfolio of Power BI dashboards showing strong visual hierarchy, navigation and practical business use.
• Hands on Power BI development, including DAX, Power Query and sound data modelling principles.
• SQL and analytical capability sufficient to interrogate data, validate measures and investigate inconsistent results.
• Ability to convert ambiguous stakeholder questions into meaningful KPIs, usable reporting and clear data stories.
• Demonstrated dashboard UI and UX capability, including wireframing, information design and user feedback.
• Strong communication skills and evidence that insights have informed a business decision or operational action.
Preferred experience and capabilities
• Retail reporting across sales, margin, availability, supply chain, digital, loyalty or programme performance.
• SAP BusinessObjects exposure or experience modernising legacy reports for Power BI.
• Experience with reporting governance, self service analytics or a relevant analytics or design qualification.
