About the position
Background:
- The SAMRC/Wits-Agincourt Research Unit is a leading health, population and development-oriented research centre
- Taking a life course approach, the Unit undertakes interdisciplinary observational and intervention research and policy evaluations collaborating with scientists from South African and African, UK/European, North American and Australian institutions
- The Unit supports a major population research infrastructure including a health and socio-demographic surveillance system (HDSS) covering 31 villages of the Bushbuckridge sub-district of Mpumalanga Province adjacent to Mozambique
Main purpose of the job:
- The successful postdoctoral fellows will join a multidisciplinary team of talented research and data scientists and enjoy unparalleled opportunity across all stages of the research process, including ethics and public engagement, field science, research data management, research-to-policy engagement, analysis, write-up and publication, as well as grants development

Location:
- Bushbuckridge sub-district, Mpumalanga Province, where Wits offers various accommodation options, or the Wits School of Public Health in Johannesburg with travel to the SAMRC/Wits Agincourt campus in Bushbuckridge
Key performance areas:
Fellows will nest within a research area depending on background, experience and interest:
- Adolescent health (including HIV, mental health, nutrition)
- Adult health (including NCDs, HIV, mental health, sleep disorders, ageing and cognition)
- Population trends, transitions, and social and environmental determinants (including migration)
- Health systems innovation (including population and clinic-hospital linkage systems, task shifting to traditional health practitioners)
- Digital innovation and applications of AI are of special interest
Required minimum education and training:
- PhD awarded within past 5 years
- Background in relevant discipline(s), including Epidemiology, Statistics, Demography, Public Health, Economics, Social Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Informatics, AI and Computing, Genomics.
- Evidence of academic and scholarly potential (publications, conference presentation, grants)
- English language proficiency, strong conceptual and writing skills
