About the position

Postion Summary:
The SSC Laboratory at iThemba LABS employs numerous experimental facilities to study nuclear structure and reaction phenomena. Exploration of the project will employ energetic deuteron beams with the AFRODITE++ facility, which employs sensitive detectors. The impact of the beam will be studies prior to test measurements involving the same beams to ensure optimum operation, followed by a full experiment at iThemba LABS. Simulations of deuteron beams will be of benefit for future experiments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform simulations of deuteron beams and associated neutrons with the beamline and spectrometers
  • Perform test measurements with active and passive neutron detection techniques to verify the simulations
  • Be the key person in performing the experimental measurements with the full spectrometer
  • Initiate and lead own research, collaborating with national and international scientists
  • Train MSc and PhD students

Minimum Qualification:

  • Doctoral Degree / NQF 10

Minimum Experience:

  • 0-1 years
  • PhD in experimental nuclear physics

Experience:

  • Experience in simulation involving neutrons and detector systems (e.g. GEANT4, etc)
  • Experience in operation of experimentation gamma-ray spectrometers and associated infrastructure
  • Experience in isomer and gamma-ray spectroscopy
  • Experience in experimental research nuclear structure studies
  • Publication record in experimental nuclear physicsKnowledge:
  • Proven ability to pursue own research interests
  • Experience doing experiments utilizing ion beams
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis software, with a high level of computer literacy and programming skills, especially using C++,ROOT and python in a Linux environment
  • Experience with electronics used in nuclear physics experiments
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Applicable knowledge to work as part of a diverse team (scientists, engineers, technicians)
  • Applicable knowledge to train students and transfer knowledge/skills
  • Excellent analytical thinking skills
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Applicable knowledge to work under pressure
  • Applicable knowledge to work safely in a laboratory environment

Additional Notes:
The incumbent may be required to perform certain tasks in areas exposed to ionizing radiation. Therefore, as an occupationally exposed worker, medical clearance by a certified and authorised Occupational Medical Practitioner will be required, and all exposed and potentially exposed employees will be subject to an appropriate radiation and health monitoring programme, in accordance with the provisions of the Radiation Safety Regulations.
