About the position
Responsible for taking ownership of a mature PHP-based software platform within the Revenue Systems division. The role focuses initially on knowledge transfer, codebase familiarisation, support and maintenance, progressing to extending and enhancing the platform and building internal technical capability.
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong portfolio of live production systems or demonstrable commercial experience will be considered alongside a formal qualification.
- Proficiency in modern PHP version 8.0 or later is essential.
Experience:
- 5+ years of commercial software development experience in PHP.
- Experience delivering, maintaining and evolving production systems of meaningful scale and complexity.
- Strong hands-on PHP framework experience, preferably Laravel and/or Symfony.
- Experience with framework-based, legacy and custom PHP codebases.
- Relational database experience, particularly MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
- Schema design, query optimisation, indexing strategy and ORMs such as Eloquent or Doctrine.
- RESTful APIs and third-party integrations.
- Authentication patterns including OAuth2, API keys and JWT.
- Git-based version control, branching strategies, pull request reviews and structured CI/CD pipelines.
- Agile/Scrum delivery experience.
- Ability to onboard to existing codebases through code reading, documentation review and structured handover.

- Apply secure API design principles.
- Follow Git-based development and CI/CD processes.
- Work within Agile/Scrum frameworks.
- 2 interview rounds: culture fit and technical.
- Based in Cape Town and currently hybrid.
