About the position
Background:
- The Isango Lethu TB Research Unit is a clinical research site in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, operated by the Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU), a division of the Wits Health Consortium
- The unit focuses on conducting clinical trials for more effective, tolerable, and shorter treatments for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB)
Main purpose of the job:
- Dispenses medication to clinical trial patients according to good pharmacy practices and protocol ensuring legislation is adhered to
Location:
- ILTBRU - Jose Pearson TB Hospital, Gqeberha
Key performance areas:
- Ensure compliance of drug usage by means of return product
- Accurately calculate and document the adherence to the product in the patient case file
- Verify script to ensure accurate dispensing
- Dispense medication in line with Standard Operating Procedures and protocols
- Ensure competence in usage of the dispensing program by performing all dispensing procedures correctly according to SOP
- Ensure correct labelling of drug prior to dispensing
- Ensure integrity of drug prior to dispensing by checking expiry date and other physical characteristics
- Conduct proper product usage counselling as and when required
- Perform home visits to study participants when required
- Ensure monthly stock take of drugs as per project specific protocol requirements
- Ensure constant supply of drugs based on patient demand by ordering drugs for the trial that you are responsible for at least two weeks prior to stock being depleted
- Ensure unused products and expired products are returned to supplier or destroyed as per project requirement
- Ensure that drugs are stored at the right temperature
- Ensure regular daily checks of room temperature and that these checks are documented
- Escalate any discrepancy in temperature as per the project requirement
- Ensure FIFE/FEFO principles are followed in the pharmacy
- Verify invoice to delivery and sign delivery note as acknowledgement of delivery and file all invoices appropriately
- Ensure proper storage immediately after receipt in line with protocol guidelines
- Ensure that shipment (outgoing and incoming) is according to specified conditions
- Document Standard Operating Procedures and study specific or pharmacy related processes
- Ensure compliance statistics are correctly calculated
- Set up a pharmacy establishment plan at the beginning of the trial and update annually if required
- Ensure SOPS are maintained and updated annually if required
- Ensure pharmacy registrations and pharmacy staff registrations is maintained
- Maintain participants and medication documents upon dispensing of drugs
- Compile any reports as requested by projects from time to time
- Ensure that all relevant documentation is forwarded to compliance or the monitor to ensure “sign on” to the respective project
- Keep pharmacy signature logs and pre-subscriber logs updated whenever there is staff turnover
- Ensure regulatory file is updated with current updates
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks & activities and demonstrates effective self-management
- Ensure high level of customer and patient centricity in all dealings with both internal and external customers
Required minimum education and training:
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience (Community Service and Intern)
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Experience in ARV dispensing, GCP, High Attention to detail / Accuracy, Patience, Stock Management , Passionate / Caring, Numeracy skills, Ability to Prioritize, Tenacity
