About the position
Background:
- South Africa is facing a rapidly increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCD's)
- To meet the challenge of NCD's, a unique collaboration of Wits Faculty of Health Sciences specialists, epidemiologists, molecular biologists, and The National Cancer Registry has formed a multidisciplinary division
- The Non-Communicable Diseases Research Division (NCDRD) was launched in 2017 within the Wits Health Consortium
Main purpose of the job:
- To perform all duties of a Pharmacist for the Clinical Trail Pharmacy in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, sponsor requirements and local (South African) Regulatory requirements
- To collaborate or work together and support the Department of Pharmacy at CHBAH in provision of pharmaceutical care for patients, including admixing of medicines and supporting patients
Location:
- Edendale Lay Ecumencial Center Clinic, Edendale, Pietermaritzburg
Key performance areas:
- To ensure any pharmacy related problems identified in an access programme are immediately brought to the attention of the Programme/Project Manager where applicable
- Ensuring medicines are safely stored, dispensed and administered
- To be the primary liaison for allocated access programmes with the study/study PI and/or Programme/Project
- Managing where applicable, for any pharmacy related issues
- To ensure that medication (treatment/study drug) is ordered, received, dispensed, returned and destroyed appropriately according to specific sponsor/study requirements and to ensure that these actions are documented accurately and timeously
- Ensure that drug accountability is done and completed accurately for each subject enrolled in a study according to guidelines and regulations described above
- Ensure that accurate compliance monitoring is done and documented appropriately
- To instruct patients on the proper use of the drugs that they are taking and stress the importance of following these instructions and to take any required corrective actions where problems have been identified
- Contribute to the pharmacy’s expansion plan where required, to assure adequate and effective running of the pharmacy
- Meet with sponsor/programme personnel at regularly intervals and with regulatory personnel at any monitoring/auditing visit(s)
- Develop programme specific and general pharmacy plans in accordance to sponsor/programme requirements
- To evaluation of the patient medicine-related needs by determining the indication, safety, and effectiveness of the prescribed therapy
- To dispensing of medicines or scheduled substance as prescribed according to hospital Standard Operating Procedures
- To determine compliance to therapy and follow up to ensure the patient’s medicine-related needs are met.
- To ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and statutory regulations (GPP, GCP, GMP etc.)
- To ensure safekeeping of pharmaceuticals, implementing measures to prevent fruitless and wasteful expenditure
- To be available for on call after hours services and/or shift work
- Develop pharmacy related SOP’s
- Supervision of Pharmacist Assistant/s
- Mainiting accurate records and compliance with regulatory inspections
- Supervising pharmacy staff and overseeing daily operations
- Ensuring standard procedures (SOP’s) are followed
Required minimum education and training:
- Qualified Pharmacist
- Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm Degree) or equivalent qualification accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) that allows registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist
- Registration with the SAPC as Pharmacist and proof of current registration
Require minimum work experience:
- 3 – 4 years of post-registration experience is preferred, especially in a clinical or outpatient setting
- Experience in inventory management, dispensing and patient counselling is beneficial
Professional body registration:
- Registered with SA Pharmacy Council
- PSSA membership and medical indemnity will be advantageous
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- The candidate must also be able to work in a highly stressful environment,
- Be very organised and they should also possess good time management skills,
- Problem solving skills,
- Be able to communicate effectively both orally and writing and
- Be attentive to detail as well as computer literate
