Overhead Lines Engineer

About the position

Our client is seeking an experienced Overhead Lines Engineer to join their power and energy team in Midrand. This opportunity is suited to a professionally registered engineer with extensive experience in the structural design and analysis of overhead transmission line infrastructure across a range of voltage levels.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and analyse transmission and distribution line structures, including steel lattice towers and monopoles.
• Undertake structural assessments of existing infrastructure and recommend reinforcement, refurbishment or replacement solutions.
• Perform tower spotting and line profiling using PLS-CADD.
• Conduct structural checks and design validation using PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE.
• Contribute to hardware design and assembly development.
• Prepare and review detailed designs, drawings and technical reports.
• Provide technical support during construction and project execution.
• Participate in design review committees and present technical solutions to clients and stakeholders.
• Provide technical input and cost estimates for tenders and procurement activities.
• Develop tools and criteria files for structural design checks.
• Collaborate with civil, electrical, geotechnical and environmental engineering teams.
• Liaise with clients, contractors and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with project and statutory requirements.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.
• Represent our client at technical meetings, workshops and design reviews locally and internationally.
• Undertake domestic and international travel where required.
• Promote strong SHEQ performance and contribute to Zero Harm objectives.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering.
• Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng registration.
• Minimum 10 years' experience in the structural design of transmission line structures.
• Strong experience with PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE and AutoCAD.
• Sound knowledge of overhead transmission line design, including sag and tensions, wind loading and conductor tensioning.
• Understanding of foundation interaction and structural performance across varying terrain and environmental conditions.
• Knowledge of relevant national and international overhead line standards and design codes.
• South African power sector experience will be advantageous, with UK power sector exposure highly beneficial.
• Strong technical report-writing, communication and client engagement skills.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness to travel locally and internationally when required.
