About the position
Background:
- The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges
- It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology
Main purpose of the job:
- The part-time consultant obstetrician/gynecologist supports the design, implementation, and advancement of clinical research focused on women's reproductive health
- This role is essential for trials requiring specialized ObGyn input, particularly in areas such as pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecological conditions
- The consultant will contribute clinical expertise to ensure scientific rigor, relevance, and ethical integrity in study protocols and proposals
- Additionally, they help shape research questions, guide study design, and provide critical insights into interventions and outcomes specific to obstetrics and gynecology
Location:
- 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Wits RHI Research Centre Clinical Research Site (CRS)
Key performance areas:
- Assist in Identifying Research Questions using with their clinical experience and identifying unmet needs that can be addressed through research in their practice
- Collaborate with Wits RHI Research Centre team to design research protocols, ensuring that the study is feasible, ethical, and relevant to the society needs and appropriate to the community we serve
- Play a role in identifying and recruiting eligible patients for obstetrics and gynaecological specific clinical trials, ensuring diverse representation in research studies
- Provide the minimum standard of care to trial participants, managing their health during the trial and ensuring their safety and well-being, unless otherwise specified in a protocol
- Collect, manage and interpret data related to patient/participant care, including examination findings, laboratory results, and other relevant information in accordance with the protocol
Required minimum education and training:
- Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB degree) and Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FCOG) and Master of Medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics and Gynecology or equivalent
Professional Body Registration:
- Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 5 years in Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Prior experience in research will be advantageous
