National Technical Manager

About the position

Description/Synopsis:

A leading organisation within the heavy equipment and engineering sector is seeking an experienced National Technical Manager to lead its national technical operations across mobile cranes and generator solutions.

 

This is a strategic leadership role responsible for managing the technical function, ensuring the efficient maintenance and repair of specialised equipment, overseeing generator manufacturing and installation projects, and driving operational excellence across the business. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership to a national team, manage supplier and OEM relationships, oversee maintenance budgets, support business growth initiatives, and ensure exceptional customer service.

 

This opportunity is ideally suited to a commercially minded technical leader with extensive experience within the heavy equipment, lifting equipment or construction machinery.

 

Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 12 essential
  
  
• Trade Qualification in Diesel Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field essential
  
  
• BCom in Business Management or similar qualification advantageous
  
  
• Minimum 5-8 years' experience in a Technical Management or Service Management role
  
  
• Strong technical experience within the mobile crane or heavy equipment industry
  
  
• Experience managing technical teams across multiple sites or regions
  
  
• Sound knowledge of preventative maintenance, repairs and workshop operations
  
  
• Experience managing maintenance budgets and cost control
  
  
• Strong commercial and business acumen
  
  
• Experience managing OEM and supplier relationships
  
  
• Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills
  
  
• Computer literacy and strong reporting skills

Main Responsibilities:

 

Technical & Operational Management

• Lead the national technical function across mobile cranes and generator operations.
  
  
• Oversee the maintenance, repair and reliability of equipment.
  
  
• Ensure technical operations are delivered safely, efficiently and within budget.
  
  
• Drive continuous improvement and technical best practices.
  
  
• Support and develop the national technical team through coaching and training.
  
  

Generator Projects & Customer Support

• Oversee generator manufacturing, installations and technical projects.
  
  
• Coordinate site surveys and provide technical support to customers.
  
  
• Manage generator registrations and OEM warranty claims.
  
  
• Ensure projects are completed on time and to customer expectations.
  
  

Commercial & Stakeholder Management

• Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers and OEM partners.
  
  
• Support generator sales and identify new business opportunities.
  
  
• Present technical solutions and provide excellent customer service.
  
  
• Monitor market trends and competitor activity.
  
  

Financial & Reporting

• Manage maintenance budgets and monitor operational costs.
  
  
• Work with Procurement to source quality products and services.
  
  
• Prepare accurate operational and management reports.
  
  

Leadership

• Lead and mentor a national team of technical professionals.
  
  
• Promote a culture of safety, teamwork and continuous improvement.
  
  
• Work closely with Operations, Procurement, Finance and other internal stakeholders to achieve business objectives.
