Our client, a leading FMCG manufacturer, is seeking an experienced and results-driven National Sales Manager to lead and direct a high-performing national sales team. Reporting to the Group Executive: Marketing, Sales and Export, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving national sales strategy, commercial growth, profitability, customer relationships, and overall sales performance across the business.
This is an exciting executive-level opportunity for a strategic sales leader with a proven track record in FMCG sales management.
Key Responsibilities
National Sales Strategy & Business Growth
- Develop and implement national sales strategies to achieve revenue, profitability, and market share objectives.
- Create and execute short, medium, and long-term sales plans aligned with business strategy.
- Identify new business opportunities, routes to market, and market expansion initiatives.
- Monitor competitor activity and market trends to maintain a competitive advantage.
- Drive customer retention and new business acquisition across all regions.
Leadership & Sales Team Management
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a high-performing national sales team.
- Drive a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement.
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, training, succession planning, and performance management.
- Conduct quarterly regional sales reviews and strategy meetings.
- Ensure KPIs and performance agreements are implemented and achieved across all sales teams.
Commercial & Financial Management
- Develop annual sales budgets and volume forecasts.
- Monitor sales performance, profitability, and margins against budget.
- Analyse pricing strategies, market trends, and commercial opportunities.
- Manage departmental expenditure and ensure effective budget control.
- Conduct P&L analysis and provide recommendations to improve profitability.
- Evaluate product performance and recommend product range improvements and rationalisation.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with key customers, distributors, and stakeholders.
- Act as a brand ambassador and represent the business at exhibitions, trade shows, and customer engagements.
- Manage key account relationships and support commercial negotiations.
- Act as the escalation point for customer concerns and ensure effective resolution.
Sales Operations & Performance
- Monitor national sales activities and ensure execution of business plans.
- Prepare monthly forecasts and sales performance reports.
- Support marketing initiatives and new product development projects.
- Review pricing structures and agency commission agreements.
- Ensure sales teams execute promotional activities and commercial initiatives effectively.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Marketing, Finance, Logistics, Operations, and Key Account teams.
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Liaise with manufacturing facilities and regional management to ensure alignment between operations and sales objectives.
- Drive collaboration across departments to achieve business goals.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- University Degree in Sales, Marketing, Commerce, Business Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 8 years' management experience in a senior sales leadership role.
- Proven experience within the FMCG sector is essential.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen.
- Experience with P&L formulation and financial analysis.
- Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency with strong Excel skills.
- Excellent leadership, coaching, and people management abilities.
- Outstanding organisational and time management skills.
- Strong negotiation, presentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet demanding deadlines.
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel nationally.
