About the position

Postion Summary:
The Egagasini Node for marine offshore systems was established in 2007 as one of the SAEON Nodes for long term observations. It has grown into an internationally-recognised long-term ocean observing and modelling network. Whilst feeding into the SAEON vision, the Node vision is to advance our understanding of our marine systems through the ability to detect, predict and react to global change in order to create a sustainable ocean environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Development of operational ocean forecast models to support stakeholder needsReport on the results to SAEON, DFFE, CSIR, DSI and relevant stakeholdersProvide knowledge transfer, capacity development and training tools

Minimum Qualification:

• Masters Degree / NQF 9

Minimum Experience:

• 5-5 years

• An MSc in a related subject (e
• g
• physical oceanographer, atmospheric or climate science, coastal engineering) with 3 years relevant work experience and/or proven experience in developing and using a numerical model
• A PhD would be advantageous

Experience:

• Proven experience with numerical models (could be ocean or atmospheric applications)
• Experience with ROMS/CROCO modelling would be advantageousExperience in Linux operating systemsProficient in python programmingSkilled in the management and analysis of large datasets analysis

Knowledge:

• knowledge of the Southern African ocean environment would be beneficialKnowledge of who the stakeholders would be for the provision of forecast- and climate- scale ocean information
• Knowledge of operational services would be beneficial
