About the position

Background:

  • The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is a major global player in infectious disease intelligence
  • The NICD is a source of knowledge and expertise in regionally relevant communicable diseases to the South African Government, SADC countries, and the African continent
  • The NICD assists in the planning of policies and programs and supports appropriate responses to communicable disease problems and issues

Main purpose of the job:

  • Conduct and monitor on-site laboratory processes and ensure efficient and accurate results

Location:

  • NICD – Sandringham, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

  • Perform laboratory testing of samples as per SOP’s and according to quality management principles in an accredited laboratory
  • Perform laboratory equipment maintenance, lab decontamination and temperature monitoring
  • Adhere to analytical times and stipulated TAT for testing and capturing/resulting
  • Verify, authorise and report test and QC results
  • Identify clerical and/or technical errors, as well as report results, document non-conformances and assist with corrective actions
  • Store samples as per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
  • Check available stock levels ensuring efficient stock control
  • Perform internal and external quality control
  • Report any deviations and participate in External Quality Assessment (EQA) testing
  • Assist with any training interventions both within NICD and external
  • Assist with laboratory audits

Required minimum education and training:

  • National Diploma in Medical Technology

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Medical Technologist in a Microbiology laboratory

Professional body registration:

  • HPCSA registration in Microbiology (Medical Technologist)

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Should possess exceptional organisational and administrative skills
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, excel and laboratory systems
  • Should be able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Should be self-motivated, and able to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Should be able to work weekends/holidays if required
