Medical Technologist (12 Months Contract - Wits DIH)

Background:

• The Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub (DIH) is a division of Wits Health Consortium
• Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences

Division: Wits Diagnostic and Innovation Hub

Main purpose of the job:

• To conduct laboratory investigations and oversee the management of the results produced

Location:

• Braamfontein, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Perform instrument and manual tests
• Processing of Sputa and Non-respiratory specimen (Digestion and Decontamination of samples)
• Perform staining methods (Auramine O and Ziehl Neelsen), examine slides under microscope, quantify and comment (morphology)
• Process positive and negative culture
• If culture is positive, then follow appropriate
• Procedures for mycobacterial identification and susceptibility/sensitivity testing
• Perform molecular assays - LPA
• Capture manual test results onto the laboratory information system
• Authorise results entered onto the laboratory information system
• Review of laboratory results
• Follow up on incomplete tests and ensure completion
• Validation of new procedures and reagents
• Ensure maintenance is conducted where required
• Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
• Respond to and report quality control issues to laboratory manager
• Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets
• Troubleshooting
• Filing of records of worksheets
• Laboratory Temperature Monitoring
• Applies and interprets results of internal and external quality assessment tests
• Reports quality related problems and attempts to solve them and reports to laboratory manager
• Review and implement changes to Standard operating procedures
• Log, label, and prepare samples for storage on the (LDMS) system

Required minimum education and training:

• National Diploma in Biomedical Technology

Professional Body Registration:

• Registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Technologist

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a Diagnostic Laboratory or Clinical Trials Environment

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

• Experience in a clinical trial environment in a TB Laboratory
• Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) courses
• Strong visual perception and good hand-eye coordination
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to work under pressure in fast paced clinical trial environment
