Medical Technologist (12 Month Fixed Term Contract - Wits Health Consortium)

About the position

Background:

• WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives

Division: HIV Sero Molecular

Main purpose of the job:

• To analyze, interpret and produce Participant results from human specimens and to maintain the quality management system for the laboratory

Location:

• Sandringham

Key performance areas:

• Receive and label samples
• Check and verify that details on tubes and labels correspond with laboratory requisition form
• Check suitability of samples to be analyzed
• Check the tests requested are correct
• Perform instrument maintenance for both manual and automated instruments
• Carry out test for HIV (serology and molecular testing)
• Analyze and interpret the results
• Follow up on incomplete tests and ensure completion thereof
• Enter results in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Verify Participant CD4 and Viral load results using Lab Track
• Store samples as per SOP
• Maintain professional body registrations and CPD
• Apply and interpret results of IQC and EQA
• Report quality related issues
• Troubleshoot laboratory problems and report to Supervisor/Manager
• Report and record non-conformances within the QMS to management
• Conform to accreditation requirements
• Review and implement changes to SOPs in order to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide a high quality, cost effective and correct results
• Assist with method validation

Required minimum education and training:

• National Diploma in Medical Technology or Biomedical Technology

Professional Body Registration:

• Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 2 years' experience as a Medical Technologist

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

• Experience in working in an HIV laboratory
• Experience in carrying out HIV serology and or molecular tests
• Certification in good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) and basic health and safety
• Attendance of CEU courses
• Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems
• Ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
