About the position
Background:
- The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges
- It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology
Main purpose of the job:
- To provide medical examinations for participants in a clinical trial according to study protocols
Location:
- Wits RHI - Lejweleputswa (Free State)
Key performance areas:
Participant Safety and Clinical Management
- Conduct clinical assessments and study visits
- Review medical history, concomitant medications, and laboratory results
- Identify, manage, and escalate clinical abnormalities and safety concerns
- Ensure participants remain medically eligible and safe throughout study participation
Protocol Compliance and Regulatory Adherence
- Perform protocol-required procedures accurately
- Adhere to approved delegation and scope of practice
- Maintain up-to-date protocol and GCP training
- Support audit and inspection readiness
Adverse Event and Safety Reporting
- Assess adverse events for severity and causality
- Document and report AEs/SAEs within required timelines
- Collaborate with investigators and study teams on participant safety management
Data Integrity and Documentation Quality
- Maintain accurate source documentation
- Review and verify clinical data captured in CRFs/EDC systems
- Resolve medical and data queries timeously
- Ensure documentation complies with ALCOA+ principles
Team Collaboration, Professional Conduct, Effective Self-Management
- Collaborate effectively with investigators and study staff
- Support smooth participant flow and clinic operations
- Communicate professionally with participants, sponsors, and colleagues
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards
- Takes ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Good clinical judgment and decision-making ability
Required minimum education and training:
- MBBCh Degree or equivalent
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 2 years relevant work experience
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Certification in International Council for Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) BLS, ACLS, or Emergency Care Certification
- Additional training in clinical research methodology or pharmacovigilance
- Training in HIV, STI, TB, women’s health, or infectious diseases research
- Postgraduate qualification or coursework in Public Health, Clinical Pharmacology, Family Medicine, or related disciplines
- Familiarity with SAHPRA, Sponsor, and ICH-GCP Regulatory requirements
- Previous experience working in clinical trials or research environments
- Experience in participant recruitment, screening, and informed consent processes
