About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives

Division: Advancing Care & Treatment for Infections
Main purpose of the job:
- Contribute to the laboratory processing and storage of samples for TB and related tasks (administrative or lab) under appropriate supervision e.g. Medical Technologist/Scientist/Lab Manager
Location:
Key performance areas:
- Receive, process and prepare samples received, according to the various Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and/or trial protocols
- Store the samples as per SOP with the entry of sample information into the various information systems
- Accurate completion and capture of information from the sample requisition forms received
- Daily equipment maintenance/verifications e.g. monitoring temperature system and acting on faulty equipment
- Process various samples according to SOP
- Routine monitoring and maintenance on the equipment used as required (and documented) as per GCLP
- Prepare media and reagents to specification according to the various SOPs
- Stocktaking of consumables/reagents used and requesting the ordering of items in good time
- Ensure lab cleanliness and order
- Enter results in the laboratory information system
- Appropriate management, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and toxic materials
- Prepare and ship clinical material as required
- Perform any additional duties as required by the academic staff within the Group
Required minimum education and training:
- National Diploma or BSC in Science related field
- Adherence to the principles of Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice (GCLP)
- Good understanding of laboratory safety and adherence to safety compliance at all times
- Registration with HPCSA as a Medical Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist
Required minimum work experience:
- Experience working in a clinical pathology or microbiology lab as a Medical Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist
- Experience in receiving, handling and storing laboratory samples
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Experience working in a research or clinical trial laboratory environment, preferably microbiology laboratory
- Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high quality scientific work
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work independently and manage high volumes of samples efficiently
- Ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and maintain productivity under pressure
- Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate effectively with laboratory and clinical terms
