About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
- In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Main purpose of the job:
- To analyse, interpret and produce patient results on blood, urine, and CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) specimens and oral and nasal biopsies
- To process, ship and store specimens per protocol
Location:
- Edendale Lay Ecumencial Center Clinic, Edendale, Pietermaritzburg
Key performance areas:
- Receive labelled and captured samples from Data Capturer
- Check and verify that details on tubes and labels correspond
- Check suitability of samples to be analysed - no clots, not haemolysed, biopsies of sufficient size
- Check the tests required and log it on the worksheet
- Perform instrument and manual tests
- Facilitate instrument calibration
- Analyse and interpret the results as and when required
- Re-run tests as and when required
- Follow up on incomplete tests and ensure completion thereof
- Capture manual test results on laboratory information system
- Print the test results and correlate data systems
- Initial print out and file it according to SOP
- Contact relevant Clinicians and/or Nurses if abnormal results have been produced
- Record that feedback was given to relevant Clinicians/ Nurses
- Store specimens in fridge/freezer as per laboratory procedures
- Centrifuging or preparing specimens with various reagents when necessary
- Record temperature of rooms and fridges with corrective action as applicable
- Maintenance of all equipment used e.g. ensuring calibrations up to date
- Decontamination of all work surfaces/bench tops
- Maintain and evaluate all specimen logs
- Working according to the study protocol
- Communicate routinely with the study coordinator, Principal Investigator, and study team
- Perform internal and external quality control
- Perform maintenance on instruments by inspecting equipment according to schedule
- Check expiry dates of reagents
- Troubleshoot error and contact Instrument Technicians or suppliers of equipment to repair if necessary
- Resolve any quality related problems and/or report it to management
- Monitor quality of specimens received
- Provide training to site staff if specimen quality is poor
- Monitor and control stock levels and advise if goods have to be ordered
- Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
- Conduct QA/QC processes
- Create and maintain SOPs
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
- Facilitate sample shipment
- Facilitate stock receipts, stock transfers and general stock management
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
- Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
- Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities
Required minimum education and training:
- National Diploma in Medical Technology (3 years) or Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Sciences
Required minimum work experience:
- 1–2 years’ experience working in a medical, research, or clinical laboratory setting
- Experience with routine laboratory processes (e.g., sample handling, processing, storage, equipment use)
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Certification in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and basic health and safety Attendance of CEU courses
- Ordered, systematic and analytical
- Exceptional organisational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Laboratory systems (DISA, Meditech)
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Assertive and confident
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
