About the position
Background:
- South Africa is facing a rapidly increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
- To meet the challenge of NCDs, a unique collaboration of Wits Faculty of Health Sciences specialists, epidemiologists, molecular biologists, and The National Cancer Registry has formed a multidisciplinary division.
- The Non-Communicable Diseases Research Division (NCDRD) was launched in 2017 within the Wits Health Consortium.
Main purpose of the job:
- To prepare, store and analysis various blood, urnine, or other samples using appropriate techniques
Location:
- DPHRU - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto, Gauteng
Key Performance areas:
- Appropriately prepared blood, urine and other samples for storage
- Ensure samples are stored appropriately at the correct temperature
- Ensure record keeping of when and how many samples are stored
- Appropriately prepared blood, urine and other samples for analysis
- Analysis samples using appropriate techniques and in line with the set out SOPs
- Create SOPs for samples, preparation, analysis and storage
- Conduct relevant equipment maintained as instructed by the laboratory manager
- Accurately capture lab results
- Ensure calibration of equipment where relevant
- Ensure all laboratory safely standards are meet during preservation, storage and analysis
- Report equipment failure of malfunction to the relevant Lab Manager
- Order relevant laboratory equipment and solutions in a timely manner to ensure consistent workflow and avoid expiration
- Various ad-hoc tasks
Required minimum education and training:
- Degree in Medicine, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related field
Required minimum work experience:
- 6 months relevant laboratory experience
- The role requires candidates to have a professional work ethic, abide by appropriate laboratory standards and conduct lab work at a safe standard
- May be required to work on Saturdays
Professional Body Registration:
- Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Technician, Independent practice
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Knowledgeable in laboratory techniques and equipment, willingness to keep up to date and be trained on new laboratory techniques and equipment
- Must possess strong organizational skills
- Ability to multi-task
- Must be detail orientated
- It is expected that s/he will apply consistent adherence to research, laboratory standards and GCP practices
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literate
- Ability to work independently and work as part of multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to work well under pressure and maintain effectiveness in changing conditions
- Willingness to work irregular hours and some Saturdays.
- Non- judgmental attitude
