About the position
Purpose of the Position:
To provide professional medical services within an occupational health setting, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of work-related illnesses and injuries. The role supports employee well-being, legal compliance, and health promotion within the workplace in accordance with South African occupational health legislation and company policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct Pre-employment Medicals, Periodic Medicals, Exit Medicals, and Fitness-for-Duty Assessments as per legislative requirements (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mine Health and Safety Act).
- Diagnose and treat work-related and general medical conditions, including injuries and occupational diseases.
- Manage and report Occupational Injuries and Diseases (OHS) in line with COIDA and Department of Employment and Labour requirements.
- Participate in medical surveillance programmes, biological monitoring, and risk-based health assessments.
- Provide clinical oversight and mentorship to nursing and allied health staff within the clinic.
- Maintain and safeguard confidential medical records and ensure proper documentation using electronic or manual health systems.
- Advise management on employee health risks, workplace accommodation, and occupational rehabilitation strategies.
- Participate in health promotion, wellness programmes, and vaccination campaigns (e.g. flu, hepatitis B, COVID-19).
- Ensure compliance with local health legislation, company policies, and international best practice standards (e.g. ISO 45001, NICD guidelines).
- Liaise with external service providers (specialists, laboratories, Workmen's Compensation bodies) as needed.
Minimum Requirements:
- MBChB / MBBCh degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
- Dispensing license and valid Driver's Licence (Code 8/B) preferred.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) advantageous.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in a clinical setting; experience in occupational health, emergency medicine, or primary health care is strongly preferred.
Desirable / Advantageous:
- Diploma in Occupational Health (DOH), SAMHS or SASTM certification, or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Working knowledge of COID Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Familiarity with OHASIS, SHEQ systems, or occupational health information systems.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
