Mechanical Technician at NRF National Research Foundation

About the position

iThemba LABS seeks to appoint a Mechanical Technician who will be responsible to provide a direct support to the end users and ensure the continuous functionality of the mechanical workshop. The incumbent will also ensure the operational readiness, safety compliance and technical integrity of all mechanical systems and relatedinfrastructure while providing the necessary technical documentation and support

Key Responsibilities:

• Produce technical specifications and drawings of new mechanical components and modifications to existing equipment
• Apply welding techniques to fabricate new components
• Identify causes of mechanical breakdowns and to prevent the same failures/problems from occurring again
• Perform repairs and maintenance on vacuum equipment along beam lines and ion sources, including rotary vane pumps, turbo pumps and cryo-pumps
• Design and manufacturer vacuum components such as flanges, fittings and special tooling for use in the vacuum laboratory
• Provide mechanical support to the Tandem accelerator and Ion implanter
• Perform prompt mechanical repairs following equipment breakdowns to minimize accelerator downtime
• Monitor and provide technical guidance in performing maintenance and repairs on the chiller systems
• Assemble test and install new mechanical equipment
• Ensure proper asset control by safeguarding, maintaining and prolonging the lifespan of mechanical equipment
• Conduct routine servicing and maintenance of the Ion Source to ensure optimal performance and reliability
• Contribute to beam development activities to support research requirements and enhance accelerator capabilities

Key Requirements

Qulifiacation

• National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Experience:

• A minimum of 3 years experience in mechanical engineering design (using CAD and/or Solid Edge)
• 3 years experience in the machining, manufacturing, assembly and installation of mechanical equipment

Knowledge:

• Basic knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics
• Basic knowledge of vacuum techniques
• Conversant with CAD systems to produce technical designs and drawings
• Fault Finding skills
• Familiar with reading and interpreting drawings
• Problem solving skills
• Good communication skills
