About the position

The National Council of SPCAs based in Gauteng, is looking to appoint a well-experienced, Senior Manager for the Wildlife Protection Unit. . It is required that you will have successfully completed the National Inspector's and/or Seniors examination and it is preferable to have a suitable qualification such as a Degree or Diploma in Nature Conservation, Wildlife Management or related fields.

The successful candidate will have sound experience in a management position with appropriate expertise in the field of animal welfare.

The main aim of the role is to develop and grow the Wildlife Protection Unit to benefit all wildlife in captivity or semi-extensive and extensive managed wildlife reserves. This will include setting goals and objectives for the NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit, in line with the overall targets of the organisation and to ensure that all are completed in order to achieve the annual unit and organisational objectives. Alsoi it will include identifying trends in trades as well as direction where the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and/or the Department of Agriculture, Land reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) may be heading that will impact animal welfare in any way, shape or form.

The emphasis is also on adherence to company policies, standards and procedures relating to all administrative and operational functions including social media contributions of the Unit.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inspectorate:

  • Monitor and inspect, where necessary, captive wildlife facilities and fulfil
  • Inspectorate functions within this capacity including processes for prosecution.
  • Compile dockets for prosecution where necessary.
  • Check and comment on docket, Warnings and notices issued by the staff in order to ensure wording and validity is correct.
  • Assist in any disaster or emergency situations no matter the day or hour as the situation arises.
  • Investigate trades legal and illegal and through the course of regular investigations,find parallels and give a summary to the Unit Manager.

Administrative

  • Create monthly report on the activities of the Unit.
  • Create trimester reports and presentations (where necessary) for feedback to the

NSPCA Board.

  • Documentation control and filing.
  • Drive (record keeping) maintenance.
  • Ensure staff acquire reasonably priced accommodation which is safe and secure when on trips

Meetings :

  • Duties will include attending internal and external meetings which impact on the desired outcome of the NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit.
  • Development, improvement and implementation of strategies, policies and standards related to wild animal welfare.
  • Serve on disaster and other committees of local, provincial and importance.

Training

  • Assist the Training Unit with lecturing for Field Officers, Trainee and Senior Inspector courses.
  • Assist with training and staff not excluding Committee members where necessary on in-field practical learning.
  • Assist with training for lectures to UNISA and other educational facilities including NGO and Governmental institutions

Requirements and Competencies:
The following are the required competencies and essential requirements to be able to fulfil the duties of the position to best ability:

  • Valid SA driver's license
  • SAPS clearance certificate
  • A passion for animal welfare and an ability to deal with incidents that can be negative in nature.
  • Good command of English (written and spoken)
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programmes
  • High degree of self-motivation, energy and pro-activity
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills, with a the proven ability to work under pressure
  • Teamwork and an approachable manner is essential in the organisation, but also an ability to work independently to meet the required level of performance to meet the standards and output.
  • Good public speaking and strong networking abilities create a strong image of the organisation and has an impact on relevant parties in the public arena.
  • A sound record of people management will provide a tool for teamwork and successful buy-in from all parties in the organisation.
  • Willingness to work after hours and on weekends when necessary.

Desired Skills:

  • Sound management experience within the Animal Welfare or Conservation sector

Desired Work Experience:

  • More than 10 years

  • Degree
