About the position

Postion Summary:
The National Research Foundation (NRF) seeks to make an appointment for the position of Manager: Science Communication and Engaged Research who will report to the SE: Senior Manager: SAASTA, within Research, Innovation and Impact Support and Advancement (RIISA).

Key Responsibilities:

• Conceptualize and develop science communication and engaged research strategies;Conceptualization, development and management of concept frameworks, business processes and systems for science communication and engaged research; Manage the development of annual performance plans; Manage the development of programme and project implementation plans; Align projects to the organization’s policies, vision, strategies and mission;Provide strategic direction to ensure achievement of Section objectives; Lead the development and implementation of science communication and engaged research development interventions, including skills development;Lead the development of terms of reference as well as the evaluation of grant funding and tenders;Create platforms for sharing best practices across the NSI through conferences, webinars and workshops;Ensure that science is communicated to the community through the development and dissemination of scientific information and products which are accurate, responsible and reliable and also end-user focused; Manage the media monitoring of the science content and programmes through online media monitoring platforms;Develop relationships with relevant media sectors to ensure that science is communicated in appropriate platformsManage contract performance in accordance with relevant specifications and objectives Provide strategic direction to ensure achievement of Department objectives;Oversee and manage the Section, including Human Resources and Finances;Develop strategies and goals of the Section as aligned to RIISA and NRF; Coordinate and manage activities and resources effectively within the Section and according to the NRF Business Partner Model;Represent the organisation on science communication and engaged research related matters at different strategic sittings like conferences and workshops, nationally and internationally

Minimum Qualification:

• Masters Degree / NQF 9

Minimum Experience:

• 5-10 years

• A Master’s Degree (NQF 9) in Science Communications, Science, Engineering or Social Science5 years work experience

Experience:

• 5 years experience in research/development and science communication or engaged research
• 3 years management experience
• Networks in the NSI

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of the Science Engagement sector and the National System of Innovation (NSI)
• Knowledge of relevant policies, legislation and regulations pertaining to the communication sector in South Africa
