About the position

Postion Summary:
iThemba LABS is seeking an experienced Department Head for its Accelerator Operations and Technical Support department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic leadership for the development of departmental plans and budgets aligned to the organisational strategy;Management of the daily operations of the various accelerators (cyclotrons and tandem accelerators), beam transmission lines and ancillary infrastructure as well as their regular maintenance, upgrades and development of new facilities;Management of the financial affairs of the department through effective budget planning and expenditure control in compliance with NRF financial policies;Ensuring good corporate governance and performance reporting;People management and development in line with the NRF HR policies and procedures;Promote collaboration on accelerator physics and engineering with internal and external stakeholders, including a number of international collaborative projects

Minimum Qualification:
  • Doctoral Degree / NQF 10

Minimum Experience:
  • 12-12 years
  • PhD (Physics or Engineering) Thesis subject on a particle accelerator or related subject will be advantageous

Experience:
  • 12 Years’ experience of work with particle accelerators; inclusive of 5 years’ experience in the management of accelerator operations, maintenance and engineering projects

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of particle accelerator physics and fundamentals of charged particle production and transportation;Knowledge of particle accelerator support systems (cooling, ventilation, power);Knowledge of radiation safety requirements in a particle accelerator facilityKnowledge of high-power radiofrequency systems, high-speed digital electronics and power supplies will be advantageous
