About the position
PURPOSE OF THE JOB: A Maintenance Mechanic will join the team in an explosive manufacturing environment. This role is critical to ensuring the reliable operation of machinery and equipment used in the production of explosive materials. The mechanic will perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot equipment failures, and support production teams to ensure continuous operations while adhering to strict safety protocols. The position demands an understanding of industrial machinery, strong troubleshooting skills, and familiarity with safety standards in high-risk environments
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) on manufacturing equipment and machinery to ensure smooth operation and minimize downtime. Tasks include lubrication, cleaning, and part replacements.
- Inspect and maintain production equipment, including stirrers, rollers, vibrating & rotating sieve beds and blending drums to ensure they meet optimal performance standards.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues affecting production equipment. Provide timely repairs to minimize disruptions while adhering to safety protocols.
- Work with production teams to identify potential machine malfunctions and immediately address issues to prevent further damage or downtime.
- Replace defective parts, such as belts, filters, bearings, gaskets and seals in equipment to ensure functionality and compliance with safety standards.
- Order and maintain inventory of necessary spare parts to ensure quick and effective repairs.
- Follow all established safety procedures and guidelines, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), while working with machines and electrical systems to avoid accidents and ensure personnel safety.
- Ensure that all work is completed in compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements for explosive materials.
- Conduct routine safety checks on equipment and machinery to identify and address potential hazards, including malfunctioning safety devices or systems.
- Ensure that all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as flame-resistant clothing, gloves, goggles, and hearing protection, are worn appropriately during maintenance work.
- Conduct routine risk assessments of the maintenance tasks, identifying potential hazards and implementing corrective actions before work begins.
- Ensure regular calibration of machines instrumentation and sensors to ensure accurate performance in explosive material production processes.
- Adjust machine settings and troubleshoot issues affecting product quality and equipment efficiency, making necessary modifications.
- Monitor the performance of critical production equipment and recommend adjustments to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and extend equipment lifespan.
- Work closely with the production team to ensure machines are operating at peak efficiency and in alignment with production schedules.
- Complete work orders and provide detailed reports on issues, repairs, and preventive maintenance performed during each shift.
- Track the status of ongoing maintenance tasks and ensure timely resolution of outstanding issues.
- Keep records of inspections, testing, and safety compliance activities in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and reports related to maintenance activities and safety compliance.
- Communicate any equipment or maintenance issues to supervisors and other stakeholders, ensuring they are aware of potential delays or required repairs.
- Participate in team meetings and safety briefings to stay updated on any changes to protocols, processes, or equipment.
- Provide first-line emergency support for equipment failures, particularly during critical production periods, ensuring minimal disruption to production schedules.
- Respond swiftly to breakdowns, making immediate repairs to avoid unsafe conditions and protect personnel and equipment.
- Participate in emergency response drills and ensure that maintenance operations are aligned with emergency procedures, particularly in the event of a fire, explosion, or chemical leak.
- Provide feedback to management regarding recurring equipment issues, potential upgrades, or process improvements to enhance operational performance.

Our cleint that is based in Somerset is looking to acquire an experience Maintenance Mechanic at one of their sites based in Somerset West. The successful candidate should possesses the ff skills and experience:
POST REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 or relevant NQF 4 equivalent qualification.
- Proven experience as a handyman or maintenance worker in an industrial setting, prior experience in a hazardous or explosive environment is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and general mechanical repairs.
- Familiarity with safety standards in high-risk environments, specifically regarding explosive materials and hazardous chemicals.
- PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) will be required at all times.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent physical condition and the ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Certification in OSHA, hazardous material handling, or any related safety training is preferred.
- Experience and knowledge of an explosives manufacturing environment.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with other service and related departments.
- Good communication skills (i.e. both verbal and written).
- Ability to demonstrate good judgement and display initiative.
- Willing and able to work shifts and overtime.
- Computer literacy is essential.
