Maintenance Assistant

About the position

We are seeking a reliable and hands-on Maintenance Assistant to support the maintenance team with the upkeep, repair and maintenance of buildings, plant equipment, machinery and related facilities.

This is a semi-skilled position suited to someone with practical maintenance experience and a willingness to learn and develop their technical skills. Training will be provided to a candidate who demonstrates the right aptitude, reliability and attitude.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with routine maintenance tasks and scheduled inspections.
• Conduct visual inspections of buildings, machinery and equipment.
• Check and maintain building lighting.
• Assist with the installation, repair and maintenance of production equipment.
• Assist with cleaning electrical cabinets, chillers, air compressors and electrical hand tools.
• Assist with roller changes as required.
• Perform basic building repairs, including:
• Painting
• Light bulb replacement
• Basic plumbing
• Plaster work
• Carpentry
• General building repairs
• Assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of the workshop, equipment and tools.
• Operate machinery and lifting equipment in accordance with training and safety procedures.
• Assist with forklifts, rigging, overhead cranes and pallet jacks where appropriately trained and licensed.
• Follow all health and safety procedures and ensure correct use of PPE.
• Handle, store and dispose of hazardous substances correctly.
• Maintain strict housekeeping standards across the work area and plant.
• Assist during emergency machinery breakdowns and help minimise production downtime.
• Be available for spillage control when required.
• Report unsafe or defective tools and equipment.
• Report accidents, incidents and near misses according to company procedures.
• Assist with investigations of serious incidents involving plant and machinery.
• Follow quality management procedures and contribute to continuous improvement.
• Complete ad-hoc maintenance duties as required.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Minimum Requirements

• Matric / Grade 12.
• At least 3 years' experience in a similar building maintenance or industrial maintenance environment.
• Working knowledge of building maintenance and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of:
• Building work
• Carpentry
• Plumbing
• Electrical work
• Understanding of production procedures and processes.
• Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Reliable and results-driven.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Willingness to learn and develop.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime when required.
• Valid licences for lifting equipment would be advantageous
