About the position
Maintenance Assistant To support the maintenance team in ensuring that all plant equipment, machinery, and facility infrastructure operate efficiently, safely, and with minimal downtime. The role assists with preventative maintenance, basic repairs, and general upkeep of the recycling plant.
Experience
- 1–2 years’ experience in a maintenance or similar role
- Exposure to industrial or recycling environments (preferred)

Requirements
- Valid driver’s license

Key Responsibilities:
1. Maintenance Support
- Assist with planned preventative maintenance on machinery such as: o Conveyors o Balers o Shredders o Sorting equipment
- Support breakdown repairs under supervision to minimize downtime
- Perform routine inspections and report faults or abnormalities
2. Equipment & Machinery Care
- Clean, lubricate, and service equipment as per maintenance schedules
- Replace basic components (belts, bearings, filters, etc.)
- Assist artisans/technicians with more complex mechanical or electrical work
3. Facility Upkeep
- Conduct general repairs on buildings and infrastructure (e.g., doors, lighting, minor plumbing)
- Ensure work areas are clean, organized, and hazard-free
- Assist with yard and plant housekeeping
4. Health & Safety Compliance
- Adhere strictly to OHS policies and procedures
- Use PPE correctly at all times
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near-misses immediately
- Participate in safety drills and toolbox talks
5. Tools & Equipment Management
- Maintain tools in good working condition
- Ensure proper storage and control of maintenance tools and materials
- Assist in stock control of spare parts and consumables
6. Operational Support
- Provide support during peak operational periods if required
- Assist with machine changeovers and setup
- Work flexible hours, including shifts or overtime when needed
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Equipment uptime and reduced downtime
- Completion of scheduled maintenance tasks
- Response time to breakdowns
- Adherence to safety standards (zero incidents)
- Housekeeping and audit scores
- Tool and equipment control Minimum Requirements Education
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Technical qualification (advantageous, e.g., N2–N3 or equivalent)
