About the position

Job Title: Librarian.
Department: Library and Archival Services.
Division: Heritage Information, Policy and Skills Development.
Location: Zonnebloem - Cape Town Head Office.
Approved Grade: C1.
Annual Salary: R200 635,00 per annum.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To assist the Senior Librarian with effective management/functioning of the SAHRA library, as well as support to core business activities.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
KPA 1: Library Operations.
KPA 2: Library Collections Management.
KPA 3: Promotion of the National Heritage Resources Library.
KPA 4: Library User Support.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Library Operations:

  • Use the library system to maintain the library database.
  • Implement library policies and procedures.
  • Provide input into the development of library policy and procedure.
  • Manage and monitor safety of the literary resources.
  • Oversee any interns within the library.
  • Assist Senior and Chief librarians with library projects.
  • Undertake scanning and digitization of archival documents.
  • Organizing and shelving of rare books, magazines, and other archival material.
  • Oversee Assistant Librarians to ensure performance targets are achieved.

Library Collections Management:

  • Provide input into the development and review of library collections development policies/procedures/guidelines.
  • Catalogue and accession library materials in accordance with library procedures.
  • Identify library materials for inclusion on the book review list.
  • Identify library materials for disposal.
  • Undertake and assist senior librarian with scheduled stocktaking.
  • Reshelf library materials.
  • Ensure library is always clean and tidy.
  • Use library systems to process loans and returns of library material.
  • Undertake daily review of newspapers and other news sources for heritage related articles.
  • Assist senior librarian with all GRAP 103 activities.
  • Ensure library database and security systems are operational and advise senior librarian on avenues for improvement.
  • Monitor library subscriptions and prepare submissions for renewal when required.

Promotion of the National Heritage Resources Library:

  • Compile and setup book displays at public events.
  • Compile and setup internal book displays to commemorate national and international holidays/events or commemorations.
  • Prepare marketing materials for submission to SAHRA marketing platforms.

Library User Support:

  • Liaise with SAHRA registry to facilitate access for researchers and other library users.
  • Liaise with library users to facilitate appointments for access.
  • Locate and facilitate access to materials for all library users.
  • Monitoring of usage of material to ensure proper handling.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Degree in librarianship, Archival Science, or similar, with at least 3 years of work experience in a similar environment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyse, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

NUMERICALSKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages and

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LICENSES:
A valid Code EB (08) driver's license will be an added advantage.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
Computer literacy with regard to the use of Excel, Word and Power Point.
