About the position
Background:
- The Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub is a division of Wits Health Consortium
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Main purpose of the job:
- To accurately receive, process samples, and ensure timely distribution to the appropriate departments or locations
Location:
Key performance areas:
- Complete relevant sections of the requisition form
- Check kit, tube and Requisition form
- Confirm details and contents of kits for distribution
- Accurately record sample information in laboratory logs or LIMS
- Ensure timely and accurate data entry and filing of lab documents
- Specimen preparation (centrifugation and aliquoting) and generation of internal specimen tracking lists
- Record sample processing details on relevant worksheets
- Specimen distribution to workbenches, labs and referral sites
- Aliquot, label and sort specimens for testing and storage
- Create referral and shipping list of samples for distribution to laboratories to ensure completeness of audit trail
- Completion of DCF’s when appropriate
- Assist with generation of results distribution logs
- Assist with Amending results according to DCF’s and then send amended result to site
- Liaise with the couriers
- Ensure suitable cleaning and preparation of equipment components such as racks and glassware
- Carry out the general maintenance for equipment in the pre-lab area
- Report any problems with laboratory equipment and office equipment e.g. Centrifuge, Printer, fax machine to the Pre-Lab Supervisor, Lab Co-ordinator or Laboratory Manager
Required minimum education and training:
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum of 1 years’ experience as a Laboratory Assistant
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Registered with HPCSA as Laboratory Assistant is desirable
- Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
- Ability to work shifts and weekend rotation
- Have attention to detail
