Main Purpose of the Job:
The L2 Commvault Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operational support, administration, and optimisation of Massmart’s enterprise backup and recovery environment. The role ensures that all data protection services remain stable, secure, and aligned to agreed SLAs, while supporting continuous improvements in automation, resilience, and recovery readiness.
The engineer will operate within a hybrid delivery model, collaborating with onsite Massmart IT teams, NEC XON service management, and the global delivery centre to ensure consistent service availability and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and maintain the Commvault backup and recovery platform across enterprise environments
- Monitor backup jobs, identify failures, and proactively resolve incidents
- Perform backup restores and support disaster recovery processes across multiple environments
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of issues
- Ensure alignment with SLAs through effective incident, problem, and change management via ServiceNow
- Perform performance tuning and capacity management of backup infrastructure
- Execute patching and upgrades of Commvault components
- Validate backup integrity and ensure recoverability of critical data
- Conduct regular disaster recovery testing and recovery validation exercises
- Support backup and recovery operations across virtual, physical, and cloud workloads
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure service continuity
- Contribute to automation initiatives using scripting and orchestration tools to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort
- Maintain accurate documentation, reporting, and ticket management
Experience:
- Proven experience in enterprise backup and recovery environments
- Hands-on experience with Commvault administration and support
- Experience supporting virtual, physical, and cloud-based workloads
- Exposure to ServiceNow or similar ITSM tools for incident, change, and problem management
- Experience in performance tuning, capacity planning, and platform optimisation
- Experience in large-scale, distributed, or retail environments will be advantageous
Qualifications:
- Relevant Commvault certifications (REQUIRED)
- Degree or Diploma in Information Technology or related field (preferred)
- Relevant backup, storage, or infrastructure certifications will be advantageous
