About the position
A growing food business is looking for an experienced and energetic Kitchen Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a busy sushi kitchen and distribution centre in Maitland, Cape Town.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing kitchen staff and drivers, maintaining consistent food quality, overseeing stock and operations, and ensuring excellent customer service.
This is not a hands-on chef position. The focus is on kitchen management, quality control, team leadership, customer service and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily operations of the sushi kitchen and distribution centre.
- Manage and coordinate kitchen staff and delivery drivers.
- Ensure consistent quality, presentation and standards across all products.
- Monitor food preparation, hygiene and kitchen procedures.
- Ensure orders are prepared accurately and efficiently.
- Manage stock levels, stock usage and ingredient availability.
- Maintain strong control over food ingredients and kitchen stock.
- Coordinate deliveries and ensure drivers operate efficiently.
- Assist with resolving customer queries and delivery-related issues.
- Maintain excellent customer service standards.
- Work closely with management to improve operational processes.
- Support the development and testing of new menu ideas and products.
- Identify opportunities to improve sales, efficiency and customer experience.
- Assist with catering requirements and retail supply orders.
- Monitor kitchen performance and staff productivity.
- Ensure the team works together effectively.
- Maintain a professional, clean and organised kitchen environment.
- Support the business as it continues to grow.
Requirements
- Minimum 2–3 years' relevant kitchen management or supervisory experience.
- 5 years' experience would be advantageous.
- Strong sushi / Japanese / Asian cuisine knowledge – mandatory.
- Previous experience managing kitchen staff.
- Experience managing or coordinating drivers/logistics is advantageous.
- Experience in a high-volume food, takeaway, catering or restaurant environment.
- Strong understanding of food quality, hygiene and operational standards.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Strong communication and people-management abilities.
- Good organisational and time-management skills.
- Own reliable vehicle – essential.
- Willingness to work weekends and extended hours when required.
- Must be trustworthy, honest and reliable.
