About the position

Postion Summary:
iThemba LABS seeks to appoint an IT Systems Administrator who will be responsible for the effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of the systems hardware, software and related infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Installing and configuring Linux and Windows operating systems, including software and hardware componentsMonitoring and maintaining system performance, including troubleshooting and resolving issuesConfiguring network services, such as DNS, DHCP, and VPNsSetting up and maintaining backup and disaster recovery systemsImplementing security measures, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systemsKeeping up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trendsDocumenting system configurations and proceduresCollaborating with other IT professionals, such as developers and network engineers, to ensure smooth system integrationProviding technical support to end-usersResponsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of the IT infrastructure of the lab

Minimum Qualification:
  • Diploma / Advanced Certificate / NQF 6

Minimum Experience:
  • 3-5 years
  • NQF 6/ND Information Technology or similar qualification

Experience:
  • 3 years experience in all aspects of professional systems administration in a Linux/Unix environment (preferably in a scientific/academic environment, with some Microsoft Windows Server and services exposure as well)

Knowledge:
  • Scripting and automation: working knowledge of scripting languages as Bash and Python to automate tasks as to update systems backup and monitoring
  • Linux: working knowledge of Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu, CentOS and Linux command line tools
  • Networking: working knowledge of network technologies as TCP/IP stack, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, load balancing to configure and troubleshoot network related issues
  • Virtualization: working knowledge of virtualization technologies like QEMU, Hyper-V, KVM to manage virtual environment
  • Security: must have a solid understanding of security measures, encryption, access control, IPS/IDS, firewalls, user management and security compliance
  • Monitoring: working knowledge of monitoring and performance tuning to monitor system performance, optimize and adjust systems and identify bottlenecks, such as Zabbix, Nagios

The incumbent may be required to perform certain tasks in areas exposed to ionizing radiation.
