About the position
IT Desktop Support Technician
Stellenbosch | Permanent
Fix it properly. Keep the estate running. Be the person people call when it matters.
We are looking for a hands-on IT Desktop Support Technician to join the IT team in Stellenbosch. This is first- and second-line support done properly: desktops, laptops, printers, mobile devices, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 and the network that ties them together.
You will own the ticket from the first call to the fix. You will set people up, keep endpoints secure, run cabling when the cabinet needs it, and know when a problem belongs with senior IT. If you like a role where you can see the result the same day, this is it.
The role
You report to the IT Manager and support users across the organisation, on site, remotely and through the ticketing system.
What you will do
- Take ownership of first- and second-line requests until they are resolved or correctly escalated.
- Diagnose and fix hardware, software, printer, peripheral and connectivity faults.
- Build workstations and user accounts for new starters, and support transfers and offboarding.
- Run day-to-day Active Directory and Microsoft 365 support: accounts, password resets, licences and multi-factor authentication.
- Manage security groups, Group Policy and the permissions issues that slow people down.
- Troubleshoot wired and wireless networks, and do the cabling work: crimping, punch-down, patching and testing.
- Support mobile devices, VPN and remote users.
- Image machines, deploy approved software, apply patches and keep endpoint protection current.
- Keep the asset register honest, and document faults, fixes and configuration changes.
- Deal with suppliers on warranty and repairs, and help with office moves, projects and routine maintenance.
- Find the cause of repeat incidents and put a lasting fix in place, not another workaround.
- Support servers, switches and wireless kit under guidance, including monitoring, backup checks and small configuration changes.
- Automate the repetitive work in PowerShell where it saves time.
- Act as the escalation point for first-line support, and help junior colleagues get better.
- Hand the hardest server, network, security and Microsoft 365 issues to senior IT, with a clear picture of what you have already tried.
RequirementsWhat you need
- 3 to 4 years in desktop support, IT support or a service desk in a Windows business.
- Current CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+. Both are mandatory. Proof will be requested.
- A relevant IT qualification, diploma or certificate, or an equivalent recognised technical qualification.
- Working knowledge of Windows 10 and 11, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, TCP/IP and an IT ticketing system.
- Practical network cabling experience: crimping, punch-down termination, patching and cable testing.
- A valid driver’s licence.
Advantageous
- A current Microsoft certification in Windows, Microsoft 365 or endpoint administration.
- A networking certification beyond Network+, or ITIL Foundation.
- Exposure to Windows Server and Exchange or Exchange Online.
How you work
- You troubleshoot in a straight line, and you know when to stop and escalate.
- You can explain a technical fault in plain language.
- You stay patient with a frustrated user.
- You can run several tickets at once and still pick the urgent one first.
- You are discreet with confidential information.
- You share what you learn.
Working pattern
- Mostly office-based in Stellenbosch, with travel between offices or sites.
- Physical work: moving kit, working in cabinets, working under desks.
- Occasional after-hours work for planned maintenance, office moves or an urgent incident.
- Health, safety and security rules apply.
If you have the certificates, the cabling hands and the judgement to own a ticket, we want to hear from you.
