About the position
Background:
- The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.
- It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology
Main purpose of the job:
- To support the research center’s efforts to secure external funding by assisting in the identification of grant opportunities, developing funding proposals, conducting background research, and supporting research administration activities
- The role will provide practical experience in grants management, proposal development, and research coordination
Location:
- 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Shandukani CRS
Key performance areas:
- Conduct desktop research to identify relevant funding opportunities
- Maintain a database of donors, deadlines, and eligibility criteria
- Review donor priorities and align them with organisational goals
- Assist in drafting concept notes, letters of intent, and full grant proposals
- Support in compiling supporting documentation (CVs, budgets, institutional profiles, etc.)
- Participate in review and editing of proposals for clarity and compliance
- Assist with literature reviews, referencing, and compiling background materials
- Support data compilation and report writing for research teams
- Ensure proper filing of project documents
- Track grant application progress and maintain status updates
- Support reporting to donors by compiling activity summaries and outcomes
- Help prepare internal progress reports
- Participate in grant writing workshops and team meetings
- Assist in internal training sessions related to grants and research processes
- Support scheduling of meetings and coordination of submissions
- Handle correspondence related to funding applications
- Maintain organised electronic and hard copy filing systems
Required minimum education and training:
- Degree in Public Health, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field
Required minimum work experience:
- No formal work experience required; prior exposure to research or proposal writing is an advantage
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Master’s degree in a related field (advantageous)
- Strong writing and analytical skills
- Familiarity with donor-funded research environments
- Excellent organisational and communication abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
