About the position
Specialist: IM Systems - Mining, Kathu, Northern Cape
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the below:
Safety, Health and Environment
- Adhere to all health and safety practices and requirements.
- Support good housekeeping in the broader department and on-site.
- Active participation in VFLs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
Performance and Delivery
- Information Management & Systems Integration
- Serves as an interface to configure, troubleshoot, and update specialist construction systems (e.g., CIFHOS, bespoke tools) to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Collaborate with the Mine's IM department and EPCM teams to integrate off-the-shelf, company-developed, and bespoke systems into the digital construction control tower.
- Integrate scalable data models and workflows to manage engineering and construction data flows, ensuring compliance with ISO 15926, CoBie, and CIFHOS standards.
- Implement data governance frameworks to ensure accuracy, security, and compliance across all systems.
- Oversee the Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to consolidate data from disparate systems (e.g., project controls, procurement, engineering) into centralised repositories.
- Technical System Maintenance & Support
- Advise and interface with the on-site technician on IT hardware (laptops, peripherals) and software inventory in the SKP offices, ensuring quick deployment and replacement.
- Coordinate with IT teams to resolve hardware/software issues impacting system functionality.
- Conduct regular audits of specialist systems to identify performance bottlenecks, cybersecurity risks, or integration gaps.
- Develop contingency plans for system downtime, including backup protocols and failover mechanisms.
- Data Management & Analysis
- Oversee project-related data collection, consolidation, and management, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and reliability.
- Analyse project data to generate meaningful insights that support decision-making regarding cost control, project timelines, and resource allocation.
- Ensure the development and implementation of advanced data models, dashboards, and analytics tools to track project key performance indicators (KPIS).
- Collaborate with project teams to identify data requirements and ensure all relevant data is captured efficiently.
- Review and validate data inputs and outputs from the IM team to ensure integrity before reporting.
- Reporting & Visualisation
- Develop and maintain standardised and customised project reports for stakeholders, including high-level executives and project managers.
- Design and implement real-time reporting solutions that provide clear visibility into project progress, risks, and performance.
- Ensure complex data is translated into visually compelling reports and dashboards using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms.
- Prepare and present data-driven insights and trends to the Manager, Project Controls, and other stakeholders during project reviews.
- Regularly review reporting outputs from the IM team and provide feedback for refinement.
- Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication
- Liaise with the Manager Project Controls and project teams to understand their data and reporting needs and ensure timely delivery of insights.
- Serves as the vital point of contact for data analytics and reporting queries from the project controls team and other departments.
- Foster effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, including finance, engineering, and procurement, to gather relevant data.
- Ensure the IM team's work aligns with project priorities and data governance standards.
- Data Governance & Quality Assurance
- Implement and enforce data governance practices, ensuring data accuracy, security, and compliance with relevant project and company standards.
- Conduct regular audits and quality checks on data and reporting processes to identify gaps and improve overall data management systems.
- Establish protocols for managing large data sets, ensuring scalability, reliability, and high performance of data analytics tools.
- Guide the IM team on adhering to best practices in data management, ensuring that data entry, storage, and extraction processes are optimised.
- Technical Leadership & Development
- Mentor and develop the IM team, providing guidance on data analytics techniques, reporting methods, and tools.
- Ensure the team is updated with the latest data analytics technologies, methods, and industry trends, particularly within mining project environments.
- Lead initiatives to automate data collection, analysis, and reporting processes for improved efficiency and accuracy.
- Collaborate with IT and other technical teams to enhance the data infrastructure required for large-scale project control analytics.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, or a related field.
- Certified Information Professional (CIP) with data analytics and Power BI, ISO 19650, PAS 1192-3, SQL, Tableau, Big Data technologies.
- SA Drivers Licence.
- In-depth Database Management Systems (DBMS) knowledge, with 6-8 years of relevant experience managing and optimising databases for large-scale projects.
- Comprehensive understanding of Data Modelling and Architecture principles to ensure scalable and efficient data structures.
- Extensive knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes for data integration and transformation within a mining environment, along with familiarity with CIFHOS, ISO 15926, and CoBie handover specifications, and a comprehensive understanding of engineering and construction data flows.
- Thorough understanding of Data Quality and Governance, including implementing best practices to ensure data accuracy and compliance.
- Familiarity with big data technologies and cloud computing, including database management and project controls in high-stakes environments.
- Proficiency in real-time data processing, reporting, and analysis using advanced tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, SQL).
- Strong programming and scripting skills (e.g., Python, SQL) for automating data management processes and enhancing reporting accuracy.
- Skilled in project management, focusing on data analytics projects, effectively tracking progress, managing resources, and ensuring timely delivery of project milestones.
- Expertise in identifying data relationships, detecting anomalies, and generating actionable insights for decision-making.
- Proficient in change management methodologies to effectively implement new data systems and processes within the organisation.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with stakeholders, including project control teams, management, and IM teams.
- Ability to lead and mentor a team, ensuring professional development and alignment with project goals.
- Problem-solving aptitude, particularly in troubleshooting data issues and performing root cause analysis to resolve them.
- Ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders to drive business improvements and ensure alignment with project objectives.
