In-House Attorney- Mining Sector

About the position

DESCRIPTION/SYNOPSIS:
An established mining company based on Johannesburg's East Rand is seeking a qualified Attorney with a solid background in mining law to take on a pivotal in-house legal role. The successful candidate will support the organisation with strategic legal counsel, ensuring compliance with all mining, environmental, and labour regulations, and providing oversight on risk management and governance. This opportunity requires a proactive and experienced professional who can confidently lead internal legal functions and engage with external stakeholders, including regulators and community representatives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Admitted Attorney in South Africa
• 5+ years post-admission experience, with a strong focus on the mining industry
• In-depth knowledge of South African mining law and regulatory frameworks (MPRDA, NEMA, Mine Health and Safety Act)
• Experience in corporate governance, BEE compliance, and labour law
• Excellent drafting, negotiation, and contract management skills
• Ability to travel occasionally to mining operations and stakeholder sites

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide legal guidance on mining rights, prospecting licenses, and permit applications
• Ensure company-wide compliance with applicable mining and environmental regulations
• Advise on labour matters, stakeholder relations, and corporate governance
• Draft and negotiate mining leases, vendor and contractor agreements, and service contracts
• Oversee litigation, dispute resolution, and risk mitigation
• Engage with government bodies, local communities, and industry stakeholders
• Monitor legal developments relevant to the mining sector and advise on implications
• Conduct training on legal compliance and manage the legal budget, including external counsel
• Represent the company in forums and industry associations when required
