Main Purpose of the Job:
To ensure the organisation complies with all applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation by implementing, maintaining, and monitoring health and safety policies, procedures, and systems. The Senior Health & Safety Officer is responsible for promoting a safe working environment, conducting inspections and audits, investigating incidents, facilitating safety training, and fostering a strong culture of health and safety across the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations, and company policies.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections, safety audits, and compliance assessments.
- Identify workplace hazards and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Conduct incident, accident, and near-miss investigations and prepare detailed reports.
- Maintain all health and safety records, registers, statutory documentation, and compliance files.
- Facilitate health and safety inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness programmes.
- Ensure employees and contractors comply with health and safety requirements.
- Monitor the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings and ensure legislative compliance.
- Assist with emergency preparedness planning, evacuation procedures, and emergency drills.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits where required.
- Promote a positive and proactive health and safety culture throughout the organisation.
Knowledge
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and associated regulations.
- Health and Safety management systems and best practices.
- Incident investigation methodologies.
- Hazard identification and risk assessment principles.
- Emergency preparedness and response procedures.
- Safety auditing processes and statutory compliance requirements.

Experience
- Minimum 3+ years' experience in an Occupational Health & Safety role.
- Proven experience conducting workplace inspections, safety audits, and incident investigations.
- Experience implementing and monitoring health and safety management systems.
- Experience delivering health and safety training and awareness programmes.
- Previous experience within engineering, construction, manufacturing, industrial, or technical environments is advantageous.
Qualification
Essential
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
- SAMTRAC certification.
Advantageous
- NEBOSH and/or IOSH certification.
- First Aid certification.
- Fire Fighting certification.
- SHE Representative certification.
- Any additional Health & Safety or Compliance certifications.
