About the Role
NEC XON is looking for a dedicated and passionate Health and Safety Officer to join our project team in Midrand on a contract basis. As a Health and Safety Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring that our project sites operate according to the highest safety standards, while fostering a positive and proactive safety culture.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for promoting, implementing, and maintaining effective health and safety systems on site. The role focuses on identifying risks, preventing incidents, ensuring legal compliance, and supporting employees through continuous training and guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific health and safety policies, procedures, and programmes
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and hazard identification
- Recommend and implement appropriate control measures, including PPE and engineering controls
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and compile detailed reports
- Facilitate safety training, inductions, and toolbox talks for employees and contractors
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, standards, and company policies
- Maintain accurate safety records, registers, and documentation
- Communicate safety information clearly to staff, management, and stakeholders
- Promote a strong and positive safety culture across all project teams
- Stay up to date with changes in health and safety legislation and best practices
- Submit weekly safety reports to the Business Unit Programme Manager
Knowledge and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements
- Good understanding of hazardous materials, high-risk activities, and safe work practices
- Working knowledge of ISO management systems, especially ISO 45001 and ISO 9001
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
- Strong organisational, planning, and time-management skills
- High attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement
Experience Required
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Health and Safety Officer or in a similar role
- At least 5 years’ experience in compiling and maintaining safety reports and documentation
- Proven experience in construction and/or energy-related environments
- Experience in working at heights and fall protection planning
- Practical experience in applying ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 standards
Qualifications
- Matric (Grade 12)
- Occupational Health and Safety qualification (SAMTRAC and/or NEBOSH)
- Legal Liability Training
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) training
- Incident Investigation training
- SACPCMP Registration (advantageous)
Desired Skills:
