About the position

Job Purpose

To ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, company policies, and client requirements by implementing, monitoring, and promoting safe working practices within the organization. The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for identifying workplace hazards, reducing risks, and fostering a culture of safety among employees.

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation, regulations, and company policies.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and risk assessments.
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to health and safety procedures.
  • Maintain health and safety records, registers, and documentation.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing health and safety policies and procedures.

Risk Management

  • Identify workplace hazards and implement corrective and preventative measures.
  • Conduct incident, accident, and near-miss investigations.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor the implementation of risk control measures.

Training and Awareness

  • Conduct health and safety inductions for new employees.
  • Facilitate toolbox talks and safety awareness campaigns.
  • Provide guidance and support to employees on safe work practices.
  • Ensure employees are informed of emergency procedures and safety requirements.

Audits and Inspections

  • Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits.
  • Ensure all safety equipment, signage, and PPE are available and in good condition.
  • Monitor contractor and visitor compliance with site safety requirements.
  • Prepare audit reports and follow up on corrective actions.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Assist in developing and implementing emergency response plans.
  • Coordinate emergency drills and evacuation exercises.
  • Ensure first aid facilities and firefighting equipment are maintained and readily available.

Reporting and Administration

  • Compile monthly health and safety reports.
  • Maintain incident statistics and safety performance records.
  • Submit reports to management and regulatory bodies as required.
  • Ensure all health and safety documentation is accurately filed and updated

Minimum Requirements




- Grade 12 (Matric).
- National Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or equivalent Health and Safety qualification.
- Registered or eligible for registration with relevant professional bodies (advantageous).
- Valid driver's license (advantageous).
- 2-5 years' experience in a Health and Safety Officer role.



Knowledge and Skills


- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
- Understanding of risk assessment and incident investigation techniques.
- Strong report writing and administrative skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to conduct training and presentations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
