About the position

This role is responsible for overseeing national disease surveillance systems, leading outbreak response initiatives, and driving data-informed strategies to protect and improve population health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Surveillance & Data Leadership:

  • Lead and strengthen national disease surveillance systems
  • Oversee the collection, analysis, and interpretation of epidemiological data
  • Ensure timely reporting and early detection of public health threats

Outbreak Response:

  • Direct and coordinate responses to disease outbreaks and public health emergencies
  • Provide expert guidance on containment and mitigation strategies

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement divisional strategy aligned to national and global public health priorities
  • Represent the organisation in high-level stakeholder engagements and international forums

Stakeholder Management:

  • Collaborate with government departments, research institutions, and global health organisations
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships to enhance public health outcomes

Leadership & People Management:

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams of scientists, epidemiologists, and public health specialists
  • Drive performance, development, and succession planning within the division

Governance & Operations:

  • Oversee budgets, resource allocation, and compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Ensure adherence to relevant legislation, policies, and quality standards

Minimum Requirements:

  • Medical degree (MBBCh or equivalent)
  • Specialist registration in Microbiology, Virology, Infectious Diseases, or Public Health
  • Registered with the HPCSA
  • 10-15 years' experience in public health, epidemiology, or infectious diseases
  • Proven leadership experience at a senior level
