About the position
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Perform general maintenance and repair tasks, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, to ensure all equipment and facilities are in optimal working condition.
- Carry out inspections of the facility to identify and address wear and tear on buildings, machinery, and equipment.
- Fix or replace defective parts in machinery, doors, windows, walls, and structural elements within the facility.
- Repair and maintain safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, alarms and emergency exits.
- Conduct minor repairs to facility infrastructure, such as patching holes in walls, replacing light bulbs, fixing leaks, and repairing plumbing or electrical issues.
- Inspect and maintain company-owned power tools, hand tools and other maintenance equipment to ensure they remain in good working condition.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the facility, including production areas, break rooms, hallways, restrooms and other common areas.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, and sanitize floors to remove dust, debris, and contaminants.
- Wipe down surfaces, including desks, tables, and equipment, ensuring they are free of dust and residues.
- Maintain a clean and organized storage area for tools, materials, and safety equipment, ensuring that everything is properly labeled and stored in compliance with safety protocols.
- Collect and dispose of waste materials in accordance with the company's hazardous waste disposal policies and local environmental regulations.
- Segregate and properly store hazardous materials such as chemicals and explosive by-products, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Safely remove debris, dust, or residues from manufacturing processes to prevent contamination and fire/explosion risks.
- Regularly check for any spills, leaks, or clutter in the facility, especially in areas where hazardous materials are stored or used.
- Ensure that all cleaning supplies are appropriately stored and labeled to prevent accidents or cross-contamination.
- Maintain proper storage and disposal procedures for cleaning products to reduce any chemical or fire hazards.
- Follow all safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, face shields, and flame-resistant clothing while performing tasks.
- Participate in safety meetings and training to stay updated on current safety procedures, especially those related to explosive materials and hazardous waste handling.
- Report any observed hazards, unsafe practices or facility issues to the Facilities Manager or appropriate authorities promptly.
- Assist in conducting regular safety checks of the facility, identifying potential hazards (e.g., spills, exposed electrical wiring, improper material storage) and addressing them accordingly.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies, tools, and maintenance materials, ensuring the facility has adequate stock for ongoing operations.
- Notify the Facilities Manager when supplies need to be reordered, and assist in the acquisition of new equipment or materials when needed.
- Maintain a well-organized inventory of tools and materials used for both repair and housekeeping activities, ensuring that all tools are stored in designated areas and properly labeled.
- Ensure that hazardous materials or chemicals are stored safely in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Document completed maintenance tasks, repairs, and inspections in a clear and organized manner for future reference.
- Report any safety incidents, equipment malfunctions, or maintenance issues promptly to management.
- Assist in keeping accurate records of inventory levels, purchases, and tool usage for facility maintenance tracking.
- Work closely with production teams, maintenance staff, and safety officers to ensure that housekeeping and maintenance activities are carried out without disrupting the manufacturing processes.
- Assist in emergency situations, such as cleaning up spills, responding to equipment failures, or supporting evacuation procedures in the event of a safety issue.

About The Employer:
Our client based in Somerset West is looking for a general handyman. The successful candidate should possess the following skills and requirements.
- Grade 12 or relevant NQF 4 equivalent qualification. Proven experience as a maintenance technician or mechanic in an industrial setting, prior experience in a hazardous or explosive environment is a plus.
- Knowledge of automation, sensors, and controls in industrial machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
- Familiarity with safety standards in high-risk environments, specifically regarding explosive materials and hazardous chemicals.
- PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) will be required at all times.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent physical condition and the ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Certification in OSHA, hazardous material handling, or any related safety training is preferred.
- Experience and knowledge of an explosives manufacturing environment.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with other service and related departments.
- Good communication skills (i.e. both verbal and written).
- Ability to demonstrate good judgement and display initiative.
- Willing and able to work shifts and overtime.
- Computer literacy is essential.
