About the position

Postion Summary:
To assist with field and laboratory research currently being conducted at the Fynbos Node

Key Responsibilities:

  • 1
  • Assistance with data collection at remote field sites on field campaigns2
  • Assistance with carrying field equipment and setting up field site3
  • Assistance with laboratory measurements, including sample preparation and data collection

Minimum Qualification:
  • Bachelors Degree / Advanced Diploma / NQF 7

Minimum Experience:
  • 0-1 years
  • BSc Degree, although a MSc in Botany or a related field (ecology) would be desirable
  • 6 months work experience in botany, plant physiology, ecology or a related fieldExperience with lab techniques/instruments (e
  • g
  • balance use; calibrating instruments)Experience with field data collection (in the field of Plant Ecology/Botany)

Experience:
  • Ability to work as part of a teamAbility to work in field settings (including in hot, windy weather)Ability to work unsupervisedAbility to work in rough terrainAbility to lift and carry equipment (> 20kg)

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of plant hydraulics

The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF). SAEON is mandated to establish and manage long-term environmental observatories; maintain reliable long-term environmental data sets; promote access to data for research and/or informed decision making; and contribute to capacity building.
SAEON develops and manages long-term environmental research platforms for a sustainable society. SAEON’s operations to observe and interpret change are geographically dispersed across a wide network of marine and terrestrial based observation platforms to produce both periodic and continuous data. The SAEON Fynbos Node is responsible for the Fynbos Biome. SAEON is funded by the Department of Science and Innovation, and managed by the National Research Foundation.
