About the position
Our client, a leading operator in the freight and logistics, maritime transport, and bulk handling industry sectors, based in Durban, is looking to fill the position of Financial Director.
Purpose of the Role:
Reporting to the Managing Director, the successful incumbent will be responsible in providing financial advice and support to senior executives and ensuring compliance, with accurate reporting, within the finance department. The role includes other support functions such as information systems, procurement and payroll.
Key Responsibilities:
Budgets:
- Oversee, review, present and monitor departmental budgets and assist each department head to produce accurate statements.
- Provides Executive management with clear concise information, both in a summarized overview as well as detailed, line for line, month by month statements.
Strategic Function:
- Analyze the financial climate, consider macroeconomics and make recommendations on creating strategic decisions which will contribute to the long term sustainability of the business.
- Interpret complex financial information, consider foreign exchange risk and make recommendations that will limit risk and save the organization unnecessary cost.
- Represent the company as required, at key external stakeholder functions and events.
- Ensure that external messages and relevant information are communicated back into the business via the appropriate forums.
Corporate Involvement:
- Monitor, update and report on financial matters at centralized meetings.
- Ensure appropriate transformation reporting standards are maintained in line with the relevant legislation.
- Create and maintain relationships with service providers, including banking institutions and external and internal auditors.
- Lead the implementation of the Socio Economic Development strategies and focus areas.
- Implement strategies for procurement, enterprise development and supplier development to maximize points in terms of the BBBEE score card.
- Preparation of financial feasibility models for capital intensive projects.
- Review the tagging process for the financial statements before uploading onto CIPC.
- Completion of the annual insurance declaration.
Finance Department Management:
- Ensure the members of the team are properly recruited, trained and fully functioning.
- Control the finance team's leave, availability over busy periods and plans audits with internal and external auditors.
- Ensure that the department always has sufficient resources to operate (even during load shedding).
- Ensure that the finance department is always running on the most appropriate software and that all staff are properly trained.
- Review of monthly finance and payroll reconciliations.
- Implement internal controls should any findings be reported by internal or external auditors.
Business Development:
- Identify problematic areas that need investigation and implement practical solutions where necessary.
- Do relevant research and prepare documents that will enable the senior executives to modify rates, marketing strategies, business opportunities, cost cutting solutions and identify other initiatives that will contribute to the sustainability of the organization.
Reporting:
- Prepare annual financial statements and annual tax return and completion of provisional taxes.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
- Prepare EXCO quarterly reports, quarterly board meetings, risk reports, keep minutes and ensure board resolutions are kept up to date.
- Report to the various committees on risk, audit, insurance and to all relevant stakeholders as required.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 Senior Certificate
- Qualified Chartered Accountant or equivalent
- Minimum of 10 years' relevant and proven experience
- Prior freight or logistics industry experience will be a distinct advantage
- Excellent computer skills including spreadsheet manipulation, report writing and the preparation of presentations
- Ability to execute at pace and to adapt quickly to external and internal influences
- Composure and agility when dealing with management issues, whilst inspiring confidence
- Excellent people management skills in facilitation as well as leadership roles
- Strong business knowledge and commercial acumen
- Must maintain professional accreditation status, membership of recognized bodies and keep up to date with changes in accounting policy
- Exceptional communication, planning, organizing, relationship building and analytical skills
- Initiative to work independently, often under tight deadlines
