About the position
Based East Rand. Join Company that was created over 100 years ago in Europe and has been present in South Africa for over 60 years. The majority of its shares are owned by a locally listed JSE Industrial Group and the remaining equity shareholding is still held by the European Holding Company. This Company is one of the most successful businesses in the local Group and imports as well as distributes their industrial equipment mainly in South Africa to the Mining & Industrial Sector. It has a separate legal entity in Zambia which is small but also extremely successful. Turnover is also created by a very well run Workshop which services equipment and does repairs & maintenance. The Company also sells spares which forms an integral part of their business. A new industrial product line was launched a few years ago and its success has exceeded all expectations. There are 6 Sales Branches around South Africa, in addition to its Holding Company based in Johannesburg where this candidate will be based.
The Finance Manager will report to the Financial Director who forms part of the EXCO Team which also includes the Managing Director, Sales Director and Branch Director. The Company is very process driven and has strict reporting deadlines both to the local Holding Company as well as to the Shareholders in Europe. It should be noted that the incumbent will be interacting with a variety of people including the Company's EXCO & Auditors, Corporate Holding Company's Management Team and overseas Shareholders as well as other staff in the Company including Branch & Zambian staff, especially during budget time, quarterly reforecasts and at year end.
The Finance Manager is responsible for the operational financial management of the Company including its 6 Branches and the small Company in Zambia. This includes budget planning, cash flow and balance sheet forecast, payroll reviews & sign-off, inventory and fixed assets controls & processing, financial management, forex & FEC's, monthly Company reporting and year end audit. Furthemore, the candidate will ensure statutory & tax compliance, management of the Company accounts & Finance Team and refining Company policies & procedures when applicable.
Key performance areas, inter alia, include:
- Manage, guide and motivate a loyal Financial Team consisting of Debtors, Creditors and Bookkeepers, all have been with the Company many years and understand their respective duties but are set in their ways.
- Monthly Financial Reporting with very strict deadlines as reports needs to be initially approved by the FD and then submitted to the Corporate Holding Company, noting that these reports can be complex due to split Shareholding as well as a small consolidation. In addition to the usual monthly requirements like reviews of GL accounts, passing journals, authorising & releasing Supplier payments, VAT recons, reviewing Payroll and Debtors & Creditors recons etc, etc, there is also a monthly cash flow & compilation of forex transactions & FEC's. The reports are prepared using Excel and Power BI noting that data is extracted from an ERP accounting package.
- Quarterly Reporting including working closely with the FD to do a revised budget and re-forecasting (business planning) including consolidating reports which are also submitted to the Holding Company. The Company Budget needs to be prepared as well once per annum together with the FD.
- Year End Audit & Reports which includes preparation of ITR14, AFS according to IFRS for the local Company, Holding Company & overseas Shareholders and controlling entire audit for the local Company, 6 Branches and Zambian Company. The audit packs is approx. 100 pages and also needs to be submitted to the Holding Company according to a very strict deadline.
- Other duties include Internal Controls Governance including review and adjustment, Branch audits as well as Risk Assessment which covers liaising with Insurance Company & Bank, assessing Debtors & Creditors, releasing payments, forex & FEC's, physical control over Assets etc.
Requirements:
- Minimum B Comm with a major in Accounting or similar, and proven Financial Managenent experience in a complex accounting environment. Ideally, experience in a multinational and/or JSE listed Company.
- If the candidate came from an Import/Distribution background in the Industrial Sector (Mining, Manufacturing or Engineering), it would certainly be recommended as the incumbent needs to understand shipping rates, forex & FEC's as well as having very strong technical accounting knowledge & experience. In addition, attention to detail is an absolute necessity in this role as well as being able to mange staff & create meaningful working relationships with them.
- Teamwork and excellent communication skills (verbal & written) due to the diverse number of people the incumbent will be interacting with, both within the business & externallys. Strong MS skills are needed, especially being able to use Power BI and advanced Excel and having used ERP accounting software.
- Proactive hands-on problem solver who with the FD takes resposibilty for the Company's finance function and able to work under extensive pressure at times and strict deadlines (which are not negotiable) whilst maintaining quality and accuracy of work.
- Well organised, efficient, self-motivated and dependable with excellent time management skills and able to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
