About the position
Background:
- The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (Wits PHRU) was established in 1996
- The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation, and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children
- In recent years, the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV
Main purpose of the job:
- To identify, screen, and recruit eligible Participants for the TB study within health facilities, ensuring informed and voluntary enrolment, accurate recruitment documentation, and sustained Participant engagement through to completion of study procedures, in line with GCP and ethical research standards
Location:
- Bloemfontein Health Facilities, Free State
Key performance areas:
- Conduct facility preparatory activities including mapping, process evaluations, footfall and surveys
- Recruit Participants in a near point of care TB testing in the designated PHCs, CHCs and EDs
- Correctly identify and screen Participants for eligibility criteria
- Obtain written informed consent in local languages
- Interview Participants individually should they meet enrolment criteria
- Collection of quality sputum specimens
- Coach Participants on good quality sputum production and collect samples as per SOP
- Adhere to appropriate infection control SOP, PPE use, waste disposal and decontamination processes
- Ensure accurate documentation and timely reporting
- Adhere to facility and study SOPs for recruitment and testing
- Adhere to GCP, POPIA and study protocol
- Ensure that timesheets are correctly completed and submitted timeously
- Act in a professional and friendly manner in all dealings with internal and external Stakeholders
- Show a high level of customer centricity at all times
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks & activities
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
- Inform relevant parties in the event of tasks or deadlines not met and provide appropriate means of resolution
- Support and drive the business’ core values

- Willing to help others and go the extra mile to meet team targets and objectives
Required minimum education and training:
- Grade 12
- Computer literacy using MS Excel and MS Word
Required minimum work experience:
- At least 1 years’ Counselling experience in the HIV field
- At least 1 years’ experience working as a Fieldworker
- The ability to work in a complex and demanding environment
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Adaptable, willing to take initiative
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills as well as high levels of computer literacy
- High-level problem-solving ability needed
- Must possess strong organizational skills
Requirements of the job:
- Proficiency in local languages e.g. Zulu/Sotho and English language and grammar is crucial
- Able to work in a highly pressurized and challenging environment
- Comfortable working with potentially infectious material
- Motivated, organized, systematic and professional
- Should be able to work under pressure and efficient in multi-tasking
- Must be willing to work shifts and weekends
