About the position

Our client, a well-established CMT Clothing Manufacturing company based in Durban, is looking to fill the position of Factory Supervisor.

Purpose of the Role:
The Factory Supervisor will be responsible for day-to-day supervision of production activities
on the factory floor. The role ensures that sewing lines and support sections operate
efficiently, production targets are met, quality standards are maintained, and workers
adhere to company policies, safety standards, and work procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
Production Supervision:

  • Supervise daily operations on assigned sewing lines or sections.
  • Ensure production targets and output schedules are achieved.
  • Monitor workflow and balance lines to maximise efficiency.
  • Identify and resolve production issues, delays, and bottlenecks.
  • Ensure machines and workstations are properly set up for each style.
  • Ability to sew using at least 2 machineries.

Quality Control:

  • Enforce quality standards at all stages of production.
  • Conduct in-line quality checks and ensure defects are corrected immediately.
  • Reduce rework, rejects, and fabric wastage.
  • Ensure adherence to approved samples and specifications.

Staff Supervision & Discipline:

  • Supervise machinists, cutters, pressers, and general workers.
  • Manage attendance, punctuality, and discipline.
  • Allocate tasks and labour according to production needs.
  • Train and coach workers to improve skills and productivity.
  • Maintain good discipline and teamwork on the production floor.

Production Planning Support:

  • Assist the Factory Manager with daily production planning.
  • Provide accurate production updates and feedback.
  • Ensure production records and line output data are correctly captured.
  • Report shortages, breakdowns, or risks that may affect delivery.

Health, Safety & Housekeeping:

  • Enforce health and safety rules on the factory floor.
  • Ensure work areas are clean, organised, and safe.
  • Report and address safety hazards or incidents promptly.

Equipment & Resource Management:

  • Ensure machines, tools, and equipment are used correctly.
  • Report machine breakdowns and coordinate with maintenance.
  • Monitor use of fabric, trims, and consumables to reduce waste.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Grade 12 Senior Certificate
  • Clothing production or supervision qualification (advantageous).
  • 3-7 years' experience in a CMT clothing factory.
  • At least 2 years' experience in a supervisory or senior machinist role.
  • Strong practical knowledge of sewing operations and garment construction.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong supervisory and people-management skills.
  • Good understanding of CMT production processes.
  • Ability to read and work from samples and specifications.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Basic computer literacy (production sheets, reports).

Working Conditions:

  • Factory-based environment.
  • May require extended hours during peak production periods.
