EXPLOSIVES MANAGER

About This Opportunity
Are you an explosives safety professional looking to take the next step in your career? Our Client is seeking an experienced Explosives Manager to serve as the legal appointee and primary explosives safety authority for our Wellington manufacturing site.
This is a strategic role where you'll shape safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, and be the go-to expert for all explosives-related matters at one of South Africa's premier defense manufacturing facilities.
What You'll Do
Strategic Safety Leadership
- Develop, implement, and champion explosives safety policies and procedures across the site
- Serve as the legal appointee and primary contact for all explosives safety matters
- Build and maintain a robust explosives safety culture throughout the organization
- Represent RDM at NIXT (National Institute for Explosives Technology) and SAFEX
Compliance & Regulatory Management
- Ensure full compliance with statutory requirements and explosive area compliance standards
- Liaise with regulatory departments on explosive incidents
- Review and approve all manufacturing and product documentation
- Stay ahead of regulatory changes and implement new safety requirements
Operational Oversight
- Manage magazines, inter-site movement of explosives, and burning ground operations
- Maintain explosive area compliance including zoning, segregation, and operational safety standards
- Conduct explosives-related audits and inspections
- Control and manage all explosive waste destruction
Technical Expertise & Investigation
- Review accident and incident reports with technical input on explosives-related matters
- Ensure corrective solutions are identified and implemented
- Collaborate with RDM Wellington Academy to align training with regulatory requirements
- Coordinate NIXT Conference, SANAS requirements, and training initiatives
Who You Are
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- UNISA Safety in the Use of Explosives (SLP-1 to SLP-4) certification including the following modules:
- PIIE01P, PIIE04S, PPSE01B, PPSE02C, PPSE05F, PPSE07H, PCPL03F, PCPL04G, PCPL05H, PCPL07K, PCPL08L, PETE01J, PETE03L, PERE04M, PETE08R
- Minimum 5 years' hands-on experience working with explosives, ordnance, or ammunition (development, manufacturing, usage, or destruction)
- Proven background in ordnance manufacture, usage, storage, or testing
- Valid driver's license (Code B minimum)

- Explosives safety management and risk assessment
- Explosive area compliance (zoning, segregation, operational safety standards)
- Ordnance and ammunition handling procedures
- Magazine management and explosives storage protocols
- Explosive waste destruction and disposal methods
- Incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Regulatory compliance and statutory requirements (Explosives Act)
- ISO Standards implementation (SHE/Quality/Environmental/Energy)
- Manufacturing process documentation review and approval
- Safety auditing and inspection methodologies
