The Role: Exchange Control Consultant
This role is responsible for ensuring that all client-related foreign exchange transactions comply with South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Exchange Control regulations. You will act as the internal and external subject-matter expert on Exchange Control, providing regulatory guidance, facilitating SARB applications, training teams, and strengthening the continuity and effectiveness of the Exchange Control function through documentation and process improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and stay up to date with SARB Exchange Control rulings, circulars, and bank interpretations
- Interpret regulatory changes and communicate updates clearly to relevant internal teams
- Review foreign exchange transactions to ensure compliance with Exchange Control regulations
- Provide accurate, practical Exchange Control guidance to clients and internal stakeholders
- Manage complex or non-standard Exchange Control queries with a solution-oriented approach
- Attend client meetings where Exchange Control expertise is required
- Prepare, submit, and track SARB applications and renewals via authorised banking partners
- Maintain detailed logs of SARB applications, outcomes, and turnaround times
- Liaise with bank Exchange Control desks to resolve queries and interpretation differences
- Design and deliver regular Exchange Control training for dealing, payments, compliance, and support teams
- Develop and maintain training materials, SOPs, and transaction checklists
- Promote consistent treatment of common transaction types, including FDI, allowances, and BOP coding
- Document and standardise recurring Exchange Control processes and workflows
- Identify operational risks and reduce single-point-of-failure dependencies
- Assist with audit trails, regulatory reporting, and compliance reviews
- Flag regulatory risks and recurring issues to leadership with recommended actions
- Drive continuous improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of the Exchange Control function

- Strong working knowledge of SARB Exchange Control regulations and application processes
- High attention to detail with a strong commitment to compliance and accuracy
- Proven ability to interpret complex regulations and apply them pragmatically
- Process-driven mindset with experience documenting SOPs and standardising workflows
- Strong problem-solving skills with a solutions-focused approach
- Clear and confident communicator, able to simplify regulatory concepts for diverse audiences
- Comfortable engaging with clients, banking partners, and senior internal stakeholders
- Experience delivering training or supporting knowledge uplift across teams
- Able to manage multiple priorities and perform under pressure
- Proactive self-starter who takes ownership of their functional area
- Continuous learner who stays current with regulatory developments
- Professional, composed, and client-focused in all interactions
- Relevant experience in Exchange Control, foreign exchange, banking, or financial services compliance
- A relevant finance, legal, or business qualification would be advantageous
